Moscow, December 22, Interfax - The Russian Orthodox Church has strongly spoken out about the proposal by United States President-elect Joe Biden to allow gender change for children from the age of eight.
"In regard to Biden's decision about an eight-year-old child being entitled to change sex, I perceive such statements as being blasphemous. I think that people propagating such ideas should be locked up in prison because, from my standpoint, it is a crime to maim an eight-year-old child or an even a sixteen-year-old," the Synodal Department for External Church Relations' head Metropolitan Hilarion told the Church and the World program on the Rossiya-24 television channel.
Children should at least grow up before making this kind of decision, because if someone, who transitioned, regrets it later, the process is irreversible, he said.
"To understand how this is all happening, just go to the website of some clinic that offers this sort of service, and read how the gender-change surgery is happening. It's hair raising what you'll read there, that's why even for a grown-up such an operation is none other than disfiguring and maiming a person," the Russian hierarch said.
"To inflict such surgeries on children is a crime which must entail criminal punishment, as does the propaganda of this sort of operations," he said.
It was reported that during his election campaign Biden said a child as young as eight can decide whether they want to transition.
