CNA Staff, Dec 15, 2020 / 07:01 pm MT (CNA).- Hungary’s Parliament passed a law Tuesday defining the family as having a woman as the mother and a man as the father, effectively banning adoptions by same-sex couples and complicating adoptions by single people.
The change is the latest of several to be made in recent years in what the government has said are attempts to preserve Hungary’s Christian identity and to boost its plummeting birth rates.
“If we give up on our Christianity, then we will lose our own identity, as Hungarians, as Europeans,” Katalin Novák, Hungary’s Minister of State for Family Affairs, told CNA last December.
Roughly half of Hungary’s population identifies as Roman Catholic, while about one-fifth identifies as Protestant or some other Christian denomination. Another fifth of the population identifies as having no religious affiliation, with Jewish, Muslim, and other religious minorities making up the rest of the population.
Novák told CNA in 2019 that Hungary’s leaders were concerned with the country’s future due to plummeting birth rate, which is 1.48, well below replacement level at 2.1 children per woman.
“We have a demographic challenge ahead of us,” Novák said. While some countries may rely on immigration, Hungary is trying to reverse the trend with a two-pronged approach: financial incentives for families to have more children, and promoting a culture that is pro-life and welcoming of large families, she added.
In that vein, the Hungarian government started offering financial incentives for couples in the country to marry and have children, including subsidized loans to those who marry before the bride’s 41st birthday.
Incentives to have children are built into the loan. One-third of it can be forgiven if the married couple has two children, and the entire loan can be forgiven if they have three children.

Now Parliament might want to consider the issue of single women voluntarily having children absent the daily presence of a responsible male parent deprives the child of necessary love, protection, and socialization to the extent it constitutes criminal neglect. Of course appropriate exceptions could be allowed for sudden and unexpected circumstances like deaths and dissolution.
A man is the father, and a woman is the mother?? My God that is outrageous in today’s world. Are the liberals having their meltdown over this outrageous turn of events???.

I’m liking Hungary more each day. Fifty years living under the heel of socialist/communist (what’s the difference?) filth will turn people toward decency and a democratic form of government as long as the memory of that tyranny lasts, and as long as the truth is taught to the young.
#12. What about a child who is up for adoption but has not been accepted by a male/female married couple? Why wouldn’t a loving and caring single person, qualified, not be acceptable to give a lonely child love and care?
Too many children, today, even in America, would love to be adopted by someone like that. The “babymama” concept is devastating the black community, making women and young girls into “baby producing whores”, denigrating the value of a loving mother/wife, and producing generations lacking male-guide fathers who should be an integral part of a child’s life.
The Left’s successful attacks on the family, the destruction of it as a loving/caring/educating unit, is perfect “Marxism”. Let the “STATE” become the parents and then you get “Good Germans” and “Good Communists/Marxists”, soul-less marching automatons like that you saw in Soviet Russia and East Germany, and still in Red China and No. Korea.
The family, like religion, morals, a good sound education, and self-value, are the key building blocks of any successful society, esp. the western societies who base much of this social structure on the Old and New Testaments.
Mao and his psychopath wife tried to destroy the Old China by destroying its basic principals, known as the “Four Olds” including the value of family unity, replacing it with, if I recall correctly, the “Three News” of the Cultural Revolution (it was a deconstruction of Sun-Yat-Sen’s early 1900’s revolution to modernize China.
We’ve known several young women, friends of my daughter, who became, by various happenstances, single mothers, and they were devoted to their children.
I think Hungary should take another look at a single female as an adoptive mother. Men, I’m not so sure about. But if you are going to try and preserve your country’s family traditions, you are going to need a lot of help so why not get it from a natural nurturer, the mother, natural or adoptive.
