Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

.

Psalm 74

A maskil[a] of Asaph.

1 O God, why have you rejected us forever?
    Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?
2 Remember the nation you purchased long ago,
    the people of your inheritance, whom you redeemed—
    Mount Zion, where you dwelt.
3 Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,
    all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.

4 Your foes roared in the place where you met with us;
    they set up their standards as signs.
5 They behaved like men wielding axes
    to cut through a thicket of trees.
6 They smashed all the carved paneling
    with their axes and hatchets.
7 They burned your sanctuary to the ground;
    they defiled the dwelling place of your Name.
8 They said in their hearts, “We will crush them completely!”
    They burned every place where God was worshiped in the land.

9 We are given no signs from God;
    no prophets are left,
    and none of us knows how long this will be.
10 How long will the enemy mock you, God?
    Will the foe revile your name forever?
11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?
    Take it from the folds of your garment and destroy them!

12 But God is my King from long ago;
    he brings salvation on the earth.

13 It was you who split open the sea by your power;
    you broke the heads of the monster in the waters.
14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan
    and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.
15 It was you who opened up springs and streams;
    you dried up the ever-flowing rivers.
16 The day is yours, and yours also the night;
    you established the sun and moon.
17 It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;
    you made both summer and winter.

18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord,
    how foolish people have reviled your name.
19 Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts;
    do not forget the lives of your afflicted people forever.
20 Have regard for your covenant,
    because haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land.
21 Do not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace;
    may the poor and needy praise your name.
22 Rise up, O God, and defend your cause;
    remember how fools mock you all day long.
23 Do not ignore the clamor of your adversaries,
    the uproar of your enemies, which rises continually.

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 50

A Psalm of Asaph.

1 The mighty one, God the Lord,
speaks and summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to its setting.
2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,
God shines forth.

3 Our God comes and does not keep silence,
before him is a devouring fire,
and a mighty tempest all around him.
4 He calls to the heavens above
and to the earth, that he may judge his people:
5 ‘Gather to me my faithful ones,
who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!’
6 The heavens declare his righteousness,
for God himself is judge.
Selah

7 ‘Hear, O my people, and I will speak,
O Israel, I will testify against you.
I am God, your God.
8 Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you;
your burnt-offerings are continually before me.
9 I will not accept a bull from your house,
or goats from your folds.
10 For every wild animal of the forest is mine,
the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know all the birds of the air,*
and all that moves in the field is mine.

12 ‘If I were hungry, I would not tell you,
for the world and all that is in it is mine.
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls,
or drink the blood of goats?
14 Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,*
and pay your vows to the Most High.
15 Call on me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.’

16 But to the wicked God says:
‘What right have you to recite my statutes,
or take my covenant on your lips?
17 For you hate discipline,
and you cast my words behind you.
18 You make friends with a thief when you see one,
and you keep company with adulterers.

19 ‘You give your mouth free rein for evil,
and your tongue frames deceit.
20 You sit and speak against your kin;
you slander your own mother’s child.
21 These things you have done and I have been silent;
you thought that I was one just like yourself.
But now I rebuke you, and lay the charge before you.

22 ‘Mark this, then, you who forget God,
or I will tear you apart, and there will be no one to deliver.
23 Those who bring thanksgiving as their sacrifice honour me;
to those who go the right way*
I will show the salvation of God.’

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Kids get the funniest ideas. I really thought that "Hallelujah" was an American word, specifically a word Southern Black Americans said that meant something like "Hurray!" or "Yippee!". Sometimes it was said, in a voice dripping with sarcasm, something like: Well, Hallelujah, you finally went and did what you were supposed to do in the first place!" It had no connection to the "Alleluia" sung in church on Easter Sunday, but I supposed that it was cheering for Jesus rising from the tomb. HURRAY!

Well, after hearing The Hallelujah Chorus for the first time at a Children's Concert in Boston's Symphony Hall, I realized that "Hallelujah" was more than all of that. It is an ancient Hebrew word that translates as "PRAISE THE LORD". That is an easy thing to do when everything is going our way. It is not so easy when we experience suffering and loss. I have lost seven people who were precious to me since May of this year. These were mentors, friends, relatives, and neighbors. On top of that, we all have felt the loss of wonderful people that we have admired over the years, such as Lloyd Marcus, Walter Williams, and Herman Cain. Our President has lost his beloved brother Robert, and our own Jim Rob has lost his precious wife Sheila. On top of that, our Nation is facing a Deep State Enemy that seems to have no end to it.

How can anyone say "Hallelujah" when that kind of thing is going on?

Well, if "Hallelujah" merely means "Hurray", it is impossible. But that is not what the word means. Some of the greatest heroes of Scripture had some of the deepest moments of loss and bereavement. David, Elijah, Samson, Job, and even Peter found themselves in the depths of despair. Sometimes it was because of something they did, but not always. In Job's case, his alleged "friends" tried to cross-examine him to find out what he did to deserve such punishment, but they were cold comfort. Job had not done anything to deserve this punishment, and yet he did not (as his wife suggested) "curse God and die". Instead, Job said:

"Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised." (Job 1:21 NIV)

Job was not happy about his situation, but he recognized the Sovereignty of God. He certainly could not say "Hurray" but he COULD say HALLELUJAH! After many pages of Job's "friends" trying to convince him otherwise, God finally speaks and shows His awesome power. Job is restored to a position even better than before. Even so, Job had gone through a test that few of us would consider bearable. Praising God in the midst of devastation is perhaps the hardest test any of us will ever encounter. And yet, the Reward is Eternal.

Psalm 142 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Prayer for Help in Trouble.

Maskil of David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer.

1 I cry out with my voice to the Lord;

With my voice I implore the Lord for compassion.

2 I pour out my complaint before Him;

I declare my trouble before Him.

3 When my spirit felt weak within me,

You knew my path.

In the way where I walk

They have hidden a trap for me.

4 Look to the right and see;

For there is no one who regards me favorably;

There is no escape for me;

No one cares for my soul.

5 I cried out to You, Lord;

I said, “You are my refuge,

My portion in the land of the living.

6 Give Your attention to my cry,

For I have been brought very low;

Rescue me from my persecutors,

For they are too strong for me.

7 Bring my soul out of prison,

So that I may give thanks to Your name;

The righteous will surround me,

For You will look after me.”

Beautiful Psalm.

I love the NASB...my very first Bible 40 years ago was that Translation.

And I love that the Christmas season when it glorifies Christ is in the darkest time of the year. And the Messiah is performed, with the Halleluiah chorus.
