Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

Psalm 40

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

1 I waited patiently for the Lord;
    he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
    out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
    and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
    a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord
    and put their trust in him.

4 Blessed is the one
    who trusts in the Lord,
who does not look to the proud,
    to those who turn aside to false gods.[b]
5 Many, Lord my God,
    are the wonders you have done,
    the things you planned for us.
None can compare with you;
    were I to speak and tell of your deeds,
    they would be too many to declare.

6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—
    but my ears you have opened[c]—
    burnt offerings and sin offerings[d] you did not require.
7 Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—
    it is written about me in the scroll.[e]
8 I desire to do your will, my God;
    your law is within my heart.”

9 I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly;
    I do not seal my lips, Lord,
    as you know.
10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;
    I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help.
I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness
    from the great assembly.

11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, Lord;
    may your love and faithfulness always protect me.
12 For troubles without number surround me;
    my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.
They are more than the hairs of my head,
    and my heart fails within me.
13 Be pleased to save me, Lord;
    come quickly, Lord, to help me.

14 May all who want to take my life
    be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
    be turned back in disgrace.
15 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
    be appalled at their own shame.
16 But may all who seek you
    rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
    “The Lord is great!”

17 But as for me, I am poor and needy;
    may the Lord think of me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
    you are my God, do not delay.

Beloved Creator,
Our God and Our King,
You Created Everything There Is Out of Nothing!
From The Massive Star Clusters and Black Holes,
To the Intricate and Unique DNA Molecule,
To the Quantum particles that continue to amaze and fascinate us,
You created all the Creatures of the Earth,
With Ingenious Systems of Respiration, Digestion, Reproduction,
Magnificent Structures of Bone and Muscle
Equipped with Hearts that Love and Minds that are capable of behaving in Your Image,
By Creating Art, Architecture, Music, Wonderful Machines and Technology.
Thank You For Giving us Voices to Sing and Hands to Heal.
Thank You for giving us aspirations to design wonderful things like Jet Airplanes and MRI Machines.
Thank You for Music, and Poetry, and Documents of Freedom like the US Constitution.
Thank You For Creating Us Just A Little Lower Than The Angels,
and giving us authority and stewardship over Your Creation.

LORD, We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,
Christians and Jews,
In Bondage in Hostile lands.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

A Prayer of David.

1 Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry;
give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.

if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me;
my mouth does not transgress.
4 As for what others do, by the word of your lips
I have avoided the ways of the violent.
5 My steps have held fast to your paths;
my feet have not slipped.

6 I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;
incline your ear to me, hear my words.
7 Wondrously show your steadfast love,
O saviour of those who seek refuge
from their adversaries at your right hand.

8 Guard me as the apple of the eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings,
9 from the wicked who despoil me,
my deadly enemies who surround me.
10 They close their hearts to pity;
with their mouths they speak arrogantly.
11 They track me down;* now they surround me;
they set their eyes to cast me to the ground.
12 They are like a lion eager to tear,
like a young lion lurking in ambush.

13 Rise up, O Lord, confront them, overthrow them!
By your sword deliver my life from the wicked,
14 from mortals—by your hand, O Lord—
from mortals whose portion in life is in this world.
May their bellies be filled with what you have stored up for them;
may their children have more than enough;
may they leave something over to their little ones.

15 As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness;
when I awake I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

In one of Mel Gibson's crazier movies, full of rolling heads and historical inaccuracies, there is a poignant scene that brought this Psalm to my mind. The hero of the story is far away, escaping from his captors. Meanwhile the hero's very pregnant wife is on the run from bad guys who are attacking her village. She manages to climb down into a dry deep pit to hide. She starts having labor pains, and then it starts to RAIN. The pit is actually a cistern and it starts to fill up with water. The sides become muddy and slippery, and the woman can't get out.She and her Newborn are rescued by the Hero in just the nick of time.

OK...so what does this have to do with Lambs, Sheep, or Shepherds?

Remember, David, the Psalmist, was a Shepherd. Not only was it his duty to "herd" the sheep, he also protected them, especially during the season when they gave birth. Sheep have a tendency to wander, and the desert is full of wadis (dry river beds) and pits that fill up with water and become muddy and slippery, or even turn into quicksand. David was probably forever pulling some poor pregnant ewe out of the mud and getting her feet back up onto solid ground.

Jesus even used this scenario when discussing the Sabbath:

…10and a man with a withered hand was there. In order to accuse Jesus, they asked Him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” 11 He replied, “If one of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out? 12How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”…(Matthew 12 NIV)

The "Mayans" in "Apocalypto" didn't know this parable, but I am willing to bet Mel Gibson had heard it once or twice.
