And Aaron shall cast lots on the two he-goats; one lot for Jehovah and the other lot for a complete removal. And Aaron shall bring the goat on which Jehovah's lot fell, and offer it for a sin offering. But the goat on which the lot fell to be the complete removal shall be presented alive before Jehovah, to make an atonement with him, to let him go for a complete removal into the wilderness. Leviticus 16:8-19From the moment Adam and Eve rejected God for the World, God had a plan for how man could be reconciled with Him. God was preparing his people in the Old Testament for the coming of Jesus and as such the sacrificial system was getting his people into the mindset that the blood is what makes atonement for sin. Jesus tells us;Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, Whom do you desire that I release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? ............... They said, Barabbas. Then he released Barabbas to them. And when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified. Matthew. 27:17-22
He did not come to destroy the Law or the prophets but rather he came to fulfill them. (Matthew 5:17)Something many do not know, is that Barabbas's name literally means son of the father. Bar means son - for example, Simon Bar-Jonah meant Simon, son of Jonah; Abbas or abba means father. So too we are sons (genetically speaking) of our Father in heaven (Rom. 8:15). Thus, we see that the example of Barabbas teaches us, among other things, the high price paid for us to be sons and daughters of our Father - sons and daughters set free from deserved death - by the price of the blood of our elder brother, Jesus the Messiah.
No doubt the Old Testament Jew knew the symbolic meaning of the Day of Atonement. They were looking to be spared another year. A sigh of relief surely expelled out of them as they saw the scapegoat set free. The Lord's goat had been slain and the blood applied to atone the nation."Then Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats: one lot for the LORD and the other lot for the scapegoat, and Aaron shall bring the goat
on which the LORD's lot fell, and offer it as a sin offering, but the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat Shall be presented
alive before the LORD, to make atonement upon it, and to let it go as the scapegoat into the wilderness."(Leviticus 16:8-10)
Matthew called him a notorious prisoner. So Barabbas was well-known throughout the region. He was like their Bonnie and Clyde, Billy the Kid, of the day. Barabbas was hated and feared by all. (Matthew 27:16)In the end, the Chief Priests made their choice: and they chose Jesus Barabbas as the scapegoat. Jesus as we know was the Fathers goat. Barabbas goes free and Jesus Christ goes to Calvary. Hallelujah, the real Day of Atonement has come to Israel!
Mark referred to Barabbas a murder. He was one of the rebels who revolted against the Jewish religious leaders and Pilate. In their revolt they murdered people.(Mark 15:7)
Luke also wrote that Barabbas was thrown in prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder. (Luke 23:19)
John called Barrabbas a robber. (John 18:40)
I’m Spartacus.
So many Christians are clueless about the Biblical meaning of a scapegoat. I pray this will enlighten those who are.
PM me if you want added to or removed from my ping list.
Exactly. I almost added that, but there are many younger FReepers who could be clueless as to the Movie, like they are the scapegoat. Plus my commentaries can already get a bit long.
So I erred on the side of caution
I remember Anthony Quinn as Barabas in the movie.
I imagined myself running lose burning down Washington DC like he did to Rome.
Good times.
;-)
I do like that song
Note to posters:
If you accept Jesus of Nazareth as your personal Lord and Savior,
you are a Christian. That is a wonderful thing.
You are not a Jew, you are a Christian.
Hallelujah! You alone are saved.
You are not “grafted in by Yeshua...” You are a Christian.
Be proud of that.
You have the keys to the kingdom.
You are not Sikh. You are not Moslem. You are not Eckankar or Hindu for goodness’ sakes.
You are NOT a Jew. Please - stop this madness.
Thanks!
I really like that “study” on the scapegoat. It’s simple enough for lay people to understand. Thank you.
Thank you.
I did not what the scapegoat was but did not connect Barabas with it!
I agree, and your point for that comment on this thread?
Maybe your just emboldening my overall point that Christ fulfilled all the ceremonial laws, but it didn’t quite come off like that.
Correct me if I’m wrong, because I never wrote anything about this being a Jewish matter.
Thank you. :)
Thanks you. :)
That was a pretty good move. I remember watching it years ago
Nice!
You are not wrong! Please forgive me - I have simply come to notice that threads like yours are increasingly invaded by creepy “Messianic Jews” who sprinkle the New Testament with silly, saccharine Jewishness. I suppose I was taking pre-emptive action.
OneVike, you did a wonderful job on this article, as always. I want to touch on one thing that will really bless a soul when reading Scripture and which you did with this piece with Simon bar Jonah and Barrabas.
It’s a real treat for one to take the time to look up the meaning of every person’s name in the Bible and every place name. It gives such a deeper look at the landscape, so to speak, when the definition is known. The names of the churches in Revelation reveal information, for example.
In my father’s Bible, which I colored in as a kid and now totally wrecked, I have the definitions on the side of many pages so that I can read them into the text. Not being Jewish, I have no clue unless I take the time to look them up.
For a very short example from memory:
Jordan is “descender”
John, “Yahweh is gracious”
Simon, “hearing” (“listener,” if you will)
Bethlechem, “house of bread”
So on and so on.
I think most people by now are familiar with Chuck Missler’s rendering of the Genesis passage of the geneaology from Adam to Noah:
“Man is appointed mortal sorrow, but the Blessed God shall come down teaching that His death shall bring the despairing rest.” (Visit khouse.org “The Gospel in Genesis”)
A beautiful thing to read, indeed!
Thanks, OneVike, and may God bless you and yours!
I understand and am not easily offended.
Any more I let it rolled off my shoulder. I kind of figured that. I agree with what you state though. Many ravenous wolves still come to deceive and devour. Thus I consider it my duty to fight the good fight and do what I can to expound the truth of the Scriptures and whenever possible open up the true meaning of the way the Scriptures free us from legalism and thus opens us up to do the good work for Christ.
Christ came to fulfill the law and set us free. Thus the fulfillment of the scape goat. It was another ceremonial law abolished throughout the life and death of Cgrist.
There was no chair in the Temple, because the Priests work was never done. Jesus said it is finished, and then sat down, let me repeat, He Sat Down, at the right hand of the father. Finished, Caput.
The Law was a tutor, we now have graduated and we no longer have need for a tutor, because Christ abolished it when he fulfilled all the requirements of the Law.
Messianic Jews need to become full time followers of Christ, not Moses.
I agree. I have planned for sometime to do an extensive study the names.
It’s a daunting task, but heck, I have until He calls me home to do it. :)
