KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Taliban birthplace Kandahar in Afghanistan has been the scene of bloody militancy and counter-militancy as at least 15 armed insurgents have been killed and 19 others including 11 police wounded in a bomb blast and a fighting.
According to an army statement released here Thursday, 15 militants have been killed and four others injured and the Taliban offensive to gain ground in Panjwayi district, Kandahar province has been repulsed.
Taliban militants attacked the security checkpoints in Yarokala area of the restive Panjwayi district on Wednesday and the security forces backed by fighting planes struck the militants, leaving 15 dead, forcing the insurgents to flee, the statement added.
Four more insurgents have been wounded, the statement said, adding the security forces would continue to chase the enemies in Kandahar and adjoining areas to ensure lasting peace and stability.
Taliban militants, who have intensified activities amid the ongoing peace efforts in Doha, haven't commented.
Meanwhile, 15 people including 11 policemen and four civilians were wounded as a car bomb went off outside a police station in Police District 11 of Kandahar city, the capital of the southern Kandahar province, on Wednesday morning.
Although no group has claimed responsibility, the hardliner Islamic State and the Taliban outfit, according to officials, have conducted deadly bombings including suicide attacks in big cities including the capital city of Kabul over the past couple of months.
Kandahar, the birthplace of Taliban, where the armed group emerged in 1994 and ruled some 90 percent of Afghanistan including the national capital Kabul until its collapse in late 2001, has been the scene of increasing insurgency over the past six months.
