Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

1 Samuel 16

Samuel Anoints David

16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”

2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”

The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.”

4 Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?”

5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?”

“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”

Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”

12 So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features.

Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”

13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.

And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.

And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.

Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Thanksgiving at my Aunt's was unbearable. It was a "command performance" in every sense of the word. Of course, we all loved Turkey, mashed potatoes and corn, but Auntie insisted on serving every vegetable known to the Western World, and we kids were expected to eat EVERY ONE of them, at the risk of a family fight. Big Fat Carrots in some kind of brown Jello, over-cooked Brussels Sprouts, Grey-Green limp spinach from a can, slimy okra, yams smashed up with marshmallows, and other unidentifiable weirdness stared up at me from my plate, piled up like a barricade to my enjoyment of the holiday. If we didn't eat those vegetables, Mom would have to endure an entire year of being scolded by my aunt about not bringing us up right. Auntie had only two children, who were "Perfect" (at least when she was looking), and Mom had six unruly but generally sweet-natured kids who loved Mom more than they hated weird vegetables. So we ate them, and began to really HATE the holiday of Thanksgiving. What made it worse was that we had to sit at a "Kid's Table".

I much preferred Family Dinners where we all sat together with a big plate of spaghetti and meatballs and even a sip of wine upon reaching the magic age of 12.

Now, that whole generation has passed on, and I like weird veggies, as long as they are NOT overcooked, LOVE Thanksgiving. My two cousins are decent, honorable people, but we NEVER talk about those "Thanksgivings" over a half century ago.

Sunday School depictions of David at this stage of his life often show him as a young boy. He was, after all, the youngest of eight sons, and not even invited to an important family meeting. We get the impression that he was sitting at "The Kid's Table" eating weird veggies, banished to the fields with the unenviable task of tending the smelly, stupid sheep. Meanwhile, his Dad and brothers were attending a very important family meeting with a World-Famous Prophet. It didn't seem fair at all.

Further study shows that Sheep were the entire wealth and security of the family. The inheritance, that would go to the First-Born, was tied up in those flocks. The family's prestige among their neighbors was determined by those flocks and herds, and the loss of even one would be very difficult to absorb. Not only the economic and social life of the family were tied up in those sheep. There was also the Religious aspect, as worship involved Sacrifice, and Sacrifice meant giving up a young fertile animal and the generations of wealth that would have resulted. So, rather than being forced to sit at "The Kid's Table", David was entrusted with guarding the single most valuable asset of the Jesse Family.

David made good use of the time he spent in the wilderness with the sheep. He practiced his instrument, wrote songs, and became quite a wonderful poet. However, his slingshot was always "locked and loaded" in case a wolf or mountain lion attacked the sheep. So he also honed his skills as a warrior. These were the exact qualities that are appropriate in a Leader. He needs to be sensitive to God, creative and imaginative, but also be instant in his response to danger, and be prepared to protect and defend his flock, perhaps even at the cost of his own life. Evidently, David's older brothers did not have those qualities, but they were tall and good-looking. As we learned from King Saul, "Tall and Good-Looking" is NOT enough.

You made me realize that Jesus also is waiting before His earthly reign begins, as must we wait before our eternal bliss commences in full. The magazines in our waiting room have 66 books and some red highlighting, and between articles we pray and say "Amen." The receptionist says, "The Great Physician will see you soon. Meanwhile, take Comfort."
