ROSARIO, Argentina – Despite restrictions on hate speech on social media in Spain, a trending hashtag calling for Catholic priests to be burned alive was not removed for violating rules against posting calls for violence.
The invitation to #FuegoAlClero, or set fire to the clergy, was first issued by several pro-Marxist accounts, originally in defense of a bill to reform Spain’s education system that would put the state in control of religious instruction in public schools and limit support for thousands of Catholic schools, which could lead to their closure.
However, the trending topic was accompanied by calls to burn down churches because “the only church that illuminates is the one that is in flames,” signed by “the daughters of the witches you couldn’t burn.”
By Tuesday evening, Twitter had done nothing about the tweets, despite thousands of users complaining the hashtag was inciting hatred and a direct violation of the company’s rules against “violence, harassment and other similar types of behavior.”
In particular, Twitter’s regulations state that users cannot “threaten violence against an individual or a group of people.” The glorification of violence is also banned, as is the use of the social media platform to promote violent extremism, harassment or hateful conduct on the basis of religious affiliation.
The “Celaa Law” – the bill to reform Spain’s education system named for the Spanish minister of education, Isabel Celaa – passed its first hurdle last week, and is expected to become a law despite the lack of support from education institutions.

Party like it’s 1936!
Franco didn’t do a good enough job.
The decisions to allow/not allow postings on Twitter and Facebook etc. should come down to this: Allow the post because of free speech, or don’t allow the post and call the cops because of threats. In this case, call the cops.
I guess the 1930s have come back in vogue throughout the West ...
You must have been brainwashed by a Pinko-Commie Public School since it was the Leftist Republican Government in Spain that raped and killed (not necessarily in that order) Nuns and Priests.
Franco's Nationalists defended and protected the Church.
I think he meant Franco didn’t kill enough Communists.
Communists are like roaches, if you don’t get them all they come back
Exactly. Strangely, there are a lot of parallels between Spain in the years leading up to the Spanish Civil War and the US right now...the increasingly aggressive left, intimidating ordinary citizens and cheating in elections.
And in terms of Spain, it looks like they’re going to do a re-run.
Does anyone have the list of all the hashtags Twitter has suppressed from trending over the years?
I’m looking forward to the part where the lefties devour each other (POUM for dinner!)
But
That usually happens. The first people the Communists killed in Spain once they got into power were the anarchists, who were the ones who had actually gotten them that power. But the anarchists weren’t needed anymore and were too radical to trust.
Many of the people in charge in Spain were Russians (that is, Soviets) and the Communists in Russia had done the same thing and had eliminated both the more moderate leftist party members and the anarchists, taking no chances.
I think that shadow meant that Franco hadn’t eliminated enough Communists. And actually, that’s true.
Unless somebody had been actively participating in murderous activities, relatively few were executed and most were sent to jail or prison camps for greater or lesser times after the war ended. While some died there, it wasn’t the policy, but the fact that Spain in general was starving. This was in part because other European countries and the US were very pro-Left and wanted to punish Franco for winning...which they did by providing very little economic help to Spain.
This was so even though Franco could have seriously hampered the Allies by refusing to allow landing or passage there, but he kept Spain neutral and also kept it supplying important minerals during that time. But to the Abaraham Lincoln Brigade left-wing romantics who populated the US State Dept., not to mention European foreign services, Franco’s success was a massive insult.
Nothing new for Europe. In the 1970s, leftist graffiti in Italy said “cloro al clero” (chlorine to the clergy).
True, and he also kept Spain out of WWII much to Hitler's dismay.
Interesting. Thanks!
