Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

.

Exodus 22
Protection of Property

22 [a]“Whoever steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it must pay back five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.

2 “If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed; 3 but if it happens after sunrise, the defender is guilty of bloodshed.

“Anyone who steals must certainly make restitution, but if they have nothing, they must be sold to pay for their theft. 4 If the stolen animal is found alive in their possession—whether ox or donkey or sheep—they must pay back double.

5 “If anyone grazes their livestock in a field or vineyard and lets them stray and they graze in someone else’s field, the offender must make restitution from the best of their own field or vineyard.

6 “If a fire breaks out and spreads into thornbushes so that it burns shocks of grain or standing grain or the whole field, the one who started the fire must make restitution.

7 “If anyone gives a neighbor silver or goods for safekeeping and they are stolen from the neighbor’s house, the thief, if caught, must pay back double. 8 But if the thief is not found, the owner of the house must appear before the judges, and they must[b] determine whether the owner of the house has laid hands on the other person’s property. 9 In all cases of illegal possession of an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any other lost property about which somebody says, ‘This is mine,’ both parties are to bring their cases before the judges.[c] The one whom the judges declare[d] guilty must pay back double to the other.

10 “If anyone gives a donkey, an ox, a sheep or any other animal to their neighbor for safekeeping and it dies or is injured or is taken away while no one is looking, 11 the issue between them will be settled by the taking of an oath before the Lord that the neighbor did not lay hands on the other person’s property. The owner is to accept this, and no restitution is required. 12 But if the animal was stolen from the neighbor, restitution must be made to the owner. 13 If it was torn to pieces by a wild animal, the neighbor shall bring in the remains as evidence and shall not be required to pay for the torn animal.

14 “If anyone borrows an animal from their neighbor and it is injured or dies while the owner is not present, they must make restitution. 15 But if the owner is with the animal, the borrower will not have to pay. If the animal was hired, the money paid for the hire covers the loss.

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

This Chapter about "Property Rights" is quite revealing. It assumes private ownership of homes, goods, and, of course, livestock.

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 16

A Miktam of David.

1 Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
2 I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.’*

3 As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble,
in whom is all my delight.

4 Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows;*
their drink-offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names upon my lips.

5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.
6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
I have a goodly heritage.

7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
8 I keep the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
my body also rests secure.
10 For you do not give me up to Sheol,
or let your faithful one see the Pit.

11 You show me the path of life.
In your presence there is fullness of joy;
in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

"No, Mo'ma. You don' wanna rent a car in Jamaica. We have de ROUNDABOUTS heah. Use de Taxis. They know how to deal with de ROUNDABOUTS!"

"It's OK, No Problem, I replied. "We have those in Boston too. Only we call 'em ROTARIES." I can handle it.

"Mo'm, dis is JAMAICA. We have 'em going in de Opposite Direction from YOURS!"

That did it. I didn't rent a car after all. The dreadlocked Taxi-driver took us everywhere we wanted to go.

Boston, Jamaica, and Great Britain are among the very few places on the planet that still have "Traffic Circles" or "Roundabouts". Originally designed to be a smooth transitional place for vehicles to swirl into their chosen lanes and swirl off in their chosen directions, it was a quaint idea that assumed CIVILITY. Like the cartoon Chipmunks that repeatedly say "After YOU!", excess civility can also clog traffic, but most jams are caused by people insisting upon their right-of-way when it is not offered. Consequently, Traffic Circles have become a wellspring of intricate laws regarding Right-of-Way (Those IN the circle have the primary right-of-way, followed by the entry of vehicles as they approach the circle, BUT, if two approach the circle at the exact same moment, the one on the RIGHT goes first. But then there is a problem of choosing a lane WITHIN the circle, based upon which exit one is choosing, causing huge back-ups on the intersecting streets, and jams WITHIN the circle.)

There is a particularly BAD Traffic Circle in Middleboro, Massachusetts. It lies at the intersection of several major arteries, Routes 28, 18, 44, and Interstate 495 (a major Beltway). Due to the absolute chaos at this Rotary, engineers re-designed it so that certain lanes fed to certain exits (even ones you don't want!) and, once in that lane, the vehicles are forced to either change lanes within the circle or be fed off an exit that is not the one you want. The signage at this junction attempts to steer people into the appropriate lanes, but the first time I experienced the new configuration, I was on the Harley and not in the right position to read the signs. Not only that, but the circle was totally different from the way I remembered it. I'm OK with it now, but it took some time to get used to it. At least it is not in the opposite direction!

One would think that The Ten Commandments would be enough. After all, they cover all the bases. The first four are about Man's Relationship to God. The last six are about how we treat one another. Jesus was able to distill the Whole Law into two principles: Love God, and Love Your neighbor as you love yourself.

But real people are like the hordes approaching the Traffic Circle from Rt 18, 28, 44, and I495. All of these routes are backing up at the Rotary because the traffic IN the Rotary has the Right-of-way. The traffic IN the Rotary won't slow down just a bit so that the feeder roads can merge together bit-by-bit. Because the feeder roads are so congested, people end up being in the wrong lane to exit at their chosen route, and so attempt to change lanes WITHIN the Rotary, causing accidents. Clever people who know the area "cut through" quiet neighborhoods to avoid the Rotary, thus turning bucolic country roads into thoroughfares.

And so, just like the mayhem at the Middleboro Rotary, the People of Israel needed more laws than were presented in The Ten Commandments. Today's reading is about Property Rights, and affirms the idea that Private Property is part of God's Plan. If we obey The Big Ten, and eschew covetousness, then all theses "sundry laws" would not be necessary. It would be a natural thing for those who Love God and Love their neighbor, to not steal, kill, or commit adultery. Those who suffered misfortune would be cared for out of the bounty of individuals, without government coercion.

But God, unlike the designers of the Rotary, knows our Nature. And therefore, these laws were necessary.

If everybody were a Saint there would be no need of all these laws, or even Traffic Circles!

If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.

If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man's field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.

If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.

If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, let him pay double.

If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour's goods.

If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to keep; and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it:

Then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour's goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good.

And if it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof.

If it be torn in pieces, then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not make good that which was torn.

And if a man borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good.

But if the owner thereof be with it, he shall not make it good: if it be an hired thing, it came for his hire.

Over the last few years, like a plague of locusts, noxious roundabouts have pustulated across the People's Republic of Maryland, much to the frustration of the inmates thereof!

Joining in prayer. Our states’ judicial systems need to revisit God’s laws especially the part about destruction of property.
