Passover Restrictions

43 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “These are the regulations for the Passover meal:

“No foreigner may eat it. 44 Any slave you have bought may eat it after you have circumcised him, 45 but a temporary resident or a hired worker may not eat it.

46 “It must be eaten inside the house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones. 47 The whole community of Israel must celebrate it.

48 “A foreigner residing among you who wants to celebrate the Lord’s Passover must have all the males in his household circumcised; then he may take part like one born in the land. No uncircumcised male may eat it. 49 The same law applies both to the native-born and to the foreigner residing among you.”

50 All the Israelites did just what the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron. 51 And on that very day the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt by their divisions.

Heavenly Father,
Blessed Are You, Oh LORD,
Our God, King of The Universe!
You Alone Are Worthy of Worship and Praise.
You Alone Are Holy,
You Alone Are The Almighty,
You Alone Are the One True God!
Ancient of Days,
Rock of All Ages,
El Shaddai,
All Sufficient,
Our Great Provider and Sovereign Lord,

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

There are two very important points in this brief passage of Passover regulations. First, the bones of the Passover Lamb must NOT be broken. This is a strange rule, because the Lamb has already been slain and eaten, so why does it matter? (Christians will see a fulfillment of this when Christ is taken down from the Cross without having had His legs broken.)

The other regulation is with regard to Gentiles. A Gentile could only participate in the Passover if he had allowed himself to be circumcised... in other words, he needed to be under the Blood Covenant of Abraham which was sealed in blood.

This passage, and all other passages and commentaries connected to it, caused the Early Church some confusion, which St. Paul addressed in several of his letters. The New Covenant was also sealed in Blood, but it is the Blood of Jesus. And so, Gentiles and Foreigners are welcomed into the Church, and do not have to undergo a painful operation to do so. We are reminded of the earlier chapter when Zipporah circumcised Moses' son at the Inn, and called Moses a "Bridegroom of Blood". Strange words, but very prophetic, since another Title for Christ is "The Bridegroom".
