Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Exodus 9
The Plague of Boils

8 Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot from a furnace and have Moses toss it into the air in the presence of Pharaoh. 9 It will become fine dust over the whole land of Egypt, and festering boils will break out on people and animals throughout the land.”

10 So they took soot from a furnace and stood before Pharaoh. Moses tossed it into the air, and festering boils broke out on people and animals. 11 The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils that were on them and on all the Egyptians. 12 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart and he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said to Moses.

How Happy we are to be called of You,
To Come into Your House With Singing and Praise,

We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

For some bizarre reason, the 1950's and 1960's were the "Age of the Suntan". Products were advertised to give people a "dark, rich, even tan" all over their bodies, and at the beach, the smell of suntan lotion was stronger than that of the tide. Secretaries sat on granite steps with their faces upturned over reflectors, to "get a tan" during their lunch hour. There were even skin dyes to get a tan without having to sit in the sun.

Mrs. R., a next-door neighbor at our summer rental, was determined to get the best tan ever. Day after day, she lay out on the beach in a bikini, slathering baby oil on every inch of her skin. By the end of the summer she looked like a piece of fried bacon. My little sister was scared of her, because she must have thought Mrs. R was an unwrapped MUMMY!

During the 70's and 80's, "Tanning Salons" appeared. Now you could get that "deep, even tan" all over, WITHOUT the pleasure of basking in the sun. The tanning beds even LOOKED like a mummy's coffin. Scary!

Well, in the years following, we found out that this was not good for our skin. My Uncle, who served on a PT Boat during WW2, was exposed to the Tropical Pacific Sunshine for months on end. He ended up with skin cancer on his head. Mom got it on her nose from the sunburns she would have gotten as a child going to Tinian Beach in Boston. (Different Climates, Same SUN!). And of course, Mrs. R. died, of Skin Cancer.

The Sun-Tan Lotion Companies quickly turned their products into SUNSCREEN Lotion, and they even have a rating system as to how much cancer causing rays they will allow through. The make-up I put on my face when about to take a long motorcycle ride is SPF 50.

This brings us to the sixth plague, which is "Boils" on the skin. Our skin is our largest organ, and as comedian Alan Sherman used to sing; "It Helps to keep your insides IN". Cuts, abrasions, and burns are injuries to the skin that come from OUTSIDE. Pimples, Lesions, and Boils erupt from inside. Both the Egyptians and the Hebrews had a Horror of skin diseases. There are whole chapters in Leviticus dealing with them. The Egyptians were very clean, bathed frequently, shaved their heads and body hair, and applied lotions and ointments. These boils were an affront to their very persons, and were painful too. What a nasty plague!

And yet...Pharaoh's Heart was hardened, and he would not let the people go.
