Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Lambs, Sheep, and Shepherds

.

Exodus 2

Moses Flees to Midian

11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. 12 Looking this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?”

14 The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.”

15 When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well. 16 Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father’s flock. 17 Some shepherds came along and drove them away, but Moses got up and came to their rescue and watered their flock.

18 When the girls returned to Reuel their father, he asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?”

19 They answered, “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock.”

20 “And where is he?” Reuel asked his daughters. “Why did you leave him? Invite him to have something to eat.”

21 Moses agreed to stay with the man, who gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage. 22 Zipporah gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom,[c] saying, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land.”

23 During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. 24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. 25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

Footnotes

1. Exodus 2:3 The Hebrew can also mean ark, as in Gen. 6:14.
2. Exodus 2:10 Moses sounds like the Hebrew for draw out.
3. Exodus 2:22 Gershom sounds like the Hebrew for a foreigner there.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Joe was a neighbor boy who was a few years older than I. He was extremely good-looking, and I had a huge crush on him. But, alas, there was no hope for me, because Joe's mother was determined that he would become a priest. Now, Joe wasn't so sure about this vocation, but his mother was widowed, suffering from a debilitating disease, and he was her only son. Therefore, he felt obligated. Then Joe's Mom declared that she would "Not DIE until she was able to receive Communion from Joe's hand", ie, after he became ordained.

Now, I think we can all agree that, whatever our denomination, the Call of God is just that. That's what the word "vocation" means. Vincent Van Gogh's father wanted him to be a Protestant minister, and Stalin was forced to go to Orthodox Seminary, but neither of those guys have a true "Vocation". Well, neither did Joe. Joe went to seminary to keep his mother alive. He chose the very longest course of study...FOURTEEN YEARS deciphering Ancient Semitic Languages. When his ordination came almost two decades later, his mother received Communion from his hand, and shortly thereafter, she passed away peacefully.

Now Joe was in a job that he had never wanted, and had never been "called to".

The last I heard, Joe left the Priesthood, married, had children, and got a job teaching Ancient Semitic Languages in a University. He was one of the most beloved Professors at the School and maybe steered quite a few students into Pastoral Service.

Moses must have thought that he was settled into his new life as a Shepherd. His 40 years of the finest education Egypt could offer, and his authority as a prince, were now things of the past. He had not been BORN a Prince of Egypt, but had been forced into it by circumstance. And yet, his true self came out when he saw the suffering of his People. He tried to deal with it his own way, by killing the Egyptian tormentor, but that didn't work. God had to remove him from that environment and "Re-train" him. And the way God re-trained Moses was by making him a Shepherd. He had to learn the management skills that would be needed for 40 years of "Shepherding" God's People in the desert.

Many times, we make choices that put us into situations that are NOT appropriate for our lives. We make these choices based upon circumstances, other people's approval or disapproval, emotions, a sense of obligation, or other inappropriate motives. Then we find ourselves in deep trouble. Other times, we hear the Call of God, and like Moses, we are able to say "Hineini" which means, "Here I am!"

As we shall see tomorrow, Moses is about to get that Call.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America!

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 130

A Song of Ascents.

1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.
2 Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplications!

3 If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
Lord, who could stand?
4 But there is forgiveness with you,
so that you may be revered.

5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
6 my soul waits for the Lord
more than those who watch for the morning,
more than those who watch for the morning.

7 O Israel, hope in the Lord!
For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with him is great power to redeem.
8 It is he who will redeem Israel
from all its iniquities.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"Moses Slays the Egyptian"

__
it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.

And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?

And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.

Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.

Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.

And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.

And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to day?

And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.

And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.

And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.

And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.

And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.

And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.
