Be convinced with these 4 biblical truths: 1. Each of us has sinned; 2. God is just, requiring a punishment for sin; 3. But out of love God sent His Son, Jesus Christ who by dying on the cross, provided forgiveness of sins in taking man’s deserved punishment; 4. Therefore, by faith alone in Christ’s sacrifice for our sins and belief in His resurrection, man can gain eternal life. I am working out my salvation in fear and trembling. Jesus told some who think they’re saved “I never knew you”. It’s in a story Revelation by Flannery O’connor read here by Studs Terkel. http://www.openculture.com/2015/12/flannery-oconnors-short-story-revelation-read-by-studs-terkel.html

He spoke “I never knew you” to those who came to Him professing their works rather than faith.

There a difference between working it out and working for it.

We don’t work for it. Good works contribute nothing towards our attaining salvation.

However, working out our salvation is the process of overcoming sin in our lives and becoming more Christlike in our character, which is the natural fruit of our salvation.

Hebrews 6:4-6 “For it is impossible to restore again to repentance those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they then commit apostasy, since they crucify the Son of God on their own account and hold him up to contempt.”

1 Corinthians 9:27 “…but I punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified.”

2 Timothy 2:12 “if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us;”

Philippians 2:12 “Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”

Yes. Salvation is a free gift from God.

We are redeemed by Christ’s death and suffering on the cross, yet we need to accept His free gift of eternal life in Heaven by our faith in Baptism, accepting His Truths (Mk 4:20) and keeping His Commandments(Mt 19:17).

Jesus warned us about false prophets and false teachers.(Mt 7;15 and 24:11 and 24:24)

Yes, we are sinners and Christ established His Church and His Sacraments for our salvation. These include Baptism (16:16), Confession (John 20:23) and the Eucharist John 6:53-54 and 51, 56,58.

Realize the gate is narrow and the way is hard. (Mt 7:13-14)
Our life here is short compared to being tested by God and then having eternal life with Him.

An awesome short story for sure.

And like most of Flannery's contemporary stories- it's right out pf the pages of the Bible....

Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the tax collectors and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.

Your comment:”We don’t work for it. Good works contribute nothing towards our attaining salvation.”

Your comment differs from the revealed Truth of God.

“What good does it profit,my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works?” “Can his faith save him?”

We need to put our faith into action that has a direct bearing on whether or not we will be saved in the end.

“So if faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.” (James 2:14-23)

Faith in God is inseparable from faithfulness to God. The faith in Christ entails the obligation to live faithfully in Christ through good works. So James clarifies the words of Paul that are not in disagreement but approach different pastoral situations.

Exactly!
You can’t say you believe and no do his will, which are good works.

It would be duplicitous and contradictory to do otherwise.

Abraham was declared righteous because he believed God, before he did any works.

Galatians 2:15-16 . We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Your interpretation of James leads to a contradiction in Scripture, with Paul saying one thing and James, allegedly, saying another.

So it’s on you ow to explain the contradiction.

Paul says not of works. Why is he wrong? Why don’t you believe him?

As for the James passage, that has been explained to you time without count. Besides, can you find more that one verse that says the same thing, that it’s works of the law that attain salvation? Because that’s Catholic’s go to verse and they don’t have any others.

There’s a huge difference between doing good works because you are saved and to get ot stay saved.

Works are an evidence of salvation, not the cause of it.

The salvation comes first, the works follow as all fruit is evidence of life in a tree.

” Salvation is a free gift from God.”

Salvation is a CONDITIONAL free gift from God. No one receives God’s free gift of salvation unconditionally. Those that meet the condition (faithful obedience to Christ - Heb 5:9) are the ones who will receive this free gift.

Throughout the Bible (OT & NT) there are many, many examples of men and women being obedient to God’s will. Yet NOT ONE TIME was their obedience ever said to have earned God’s free gift. Their faithful obedience was a necessary condition that God placed upon His free gift.

The free gift of salvation cannot then be obtained by faith alone which is void of obedience but is obtained by an obedient faith. Any argument that obedience to God is an attempt to earn the free gift of God has no Biblical, logical basis.

From John Calvin's Antidote to the Council of Trent (1547):

I wish the reader to understand that as often as we mention Faith alone in this question, we are not thinking of a dead faith, which worketh not by love, but holding faith to be the only cause of justification. (Galatians 5:6; Romans 3:22.) It is therefore faith alone which justifies, and yet the faith which justifies is not alone: just as it is the heat alone of the sun which warms the earth, and yet in the sun it is not alone, because it is constantly conjoined with light. Wherefore we do not separate the whole grace of regeneration from faith, but claim the power and faculty of justifying entirely for faith, as we ought.

Calvin contradicts James who said “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.”

Obedient works in doing God’s will is what justifies. This means a NT faith includes obedience and is dead apart from obedience.

Calvin: “ It is therefore faith alone which justifies, and yet the faith which justifies is not alone: “

A very contradicting, illogical statement. Something as faith cannot be both “alone” and “not alone” at the same time.

Luther nor Calvin could ever show one example where a disobedient person who was rebellious to doing God’s will was unconditionally justified by God anyway.

One must FIRST meet the condition by being obedient THEN one receives the free gift.

So “faith without works is dead”. Obedience is what gives life to faith, without those works ‘faith alone’ remains dead, useless.

“Faith” justifies Rom 5:1
“Faith alone” does not justify James 2:24

This means “faith” and “faith alone” cannot be same thing. “Faith” includes obedient works while “faith alone” is void of obedient works.

In your recap, you have changed what Calvin said. Faith alone justifies, but it also does more that justify; it spurs the faithful to good works. The good works come out of faith.

I realize many follow false teachers and do not examine or understand the Bible in the full context of God’s inspired and revealed Truth. They often omit or misinterpret God’s Word. For example, like the Jews at Capernaum, many reject the Sacrament of the Eucharist - the Real Presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus that we need to eat and drink for our salvation.

Salvation is a free gift from God, and faith is a free gift from God and requires action on our part to accept this gift. Faith is a relationship with God as well as acceptance of God’s revealed truths. We live our faith by good works in obedience to God as Jesus was obedient to the will of God the Father.

Paul’s epistles were directed to issues related to conversion that the works of the law - Mosaic Law that no one can earn or merit the free gift of grace by Obedience to the Torah.

James’s letter addresses those already practicing the faith that we accept our faith with charity in doing good works as Jesus did (Mt 5:16 John 14:12)

So you ignore the words of Jesus? “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father .” (John 4:12)

May you find and understand God’s Truth and not feel good false teachings.
