A US Bishop Discovers the Traditional Latin Mass
Bishop Joseph Strickland discusses what inspired him to celebrate the extraordinary form of the Mass on June 11.
TYLER, Texas Before January, Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, had only attended a traditional Latin Mass once before and never had even said the words of consecration in Latin in the 35 years of his priesthood.
He changed all that in a dramatic way, celebrating his first Mass in the extraordinary form on June 11, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi on the Church calendar followed by traditional Catholics.
His attraction to the traditional Latin Mass, he explained, was part of a spiritual journey that more and more centered his life on the Eucharist, and from this focus came his dedication of the year 2020 to the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Gad, that makes me feel old, I remember when it wasn’t hidden but celebrated openly back in college in the late 1960’s. (St. Joseph’s College of Indiana)
Not Catholic, but I have some fond early memories re:my best friend who was. I recall when Catholic folks shared a universal language (Latin) wherever you went, before V2.
I recited those Latin responses from 1960-63 as an altar boy.
It’s very refreshing to hear a Bishop speak of spiritual things rather than political things.
AMDG!
I was an altar boy in the early 1960s, and of course back then the Mass was in Latin. All our recitations were in Latin. It contributed to the mystery of the Mass.
All that changed, of course, with Vatican II, when I was in high school. When the service went to “guitar Mass” they lost me.
Dominus vobiscum.
My parents used to attend a traditonal Latin Mass and we were able to have a Latin requiem Mass for my mother's funeral. But the current bishop seems to have ended the Latin Mass there (or perhaps they couldn't find a priest willing and able to say the Mass in Latin).
I was told by a Karen in my parish that any Latin Mass should be the Novus Ordo Mass. I attended one of those once--even though the Latin was pronounced correctly it just wasn't the same.
I can’t say I’m all that fond of the Latin, as it maybe reminds me of fasting from midnight until about 1 pm on Sunday. However, I’ve heard a number of exorcists and persons who assisted at exorcisms testify that praying in Latin REALLY upsets evil spirits and very effective at dispatching them.
Most of the priests that I know (many retired) have never said a Latin Mass.
When I suggested at lease once a year so that younger Catholics could participate in the solemnity of the High Mass, they had no interest.
I still have a Daily Mass Missal in Latin and English dated 1961. It was not hard to follow the Mass. Most people followed the Mass in the Missal. The altar boy gave most of the responses in Latin. The altar was in the back under the Crucifix as the priest faced the sanctuary with his back to people.
The latin greeting was “Dominus vobiscum”. and Response “Et cum spiritu tuo.” The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. There was Greek in the “Kyrie eleison.”
Used to fast from Midnight before Communion.

Dominus vobiscum.

Et cum spiritu tuo.
The Satan Council (1962-1965) had the express purpose of destroying traditional, orthodox Roman Catholicism, and to accomplish that they knew they had to destroy the Tridentine Mass. The result was the mandated worldwide replacement of the Holy Mass with the Protestant-inspired service called the Novus Ordo. Below is the 20-year old Index of Catholicism’s Decline, a report of the destruction the Satan Council had wrought by the time the study was released. Read it and weep!

All this trouble was started by that loser Roncalli with his assinine Vatican II. All this after having stolen the Papacy from Cardinal Siri in 1958. The Church was ruined by him and his Ilk.
The karen is wrong, 2007 Summorum Pontificum
That’s probably why 6:30 am masses were popular in those days!
But for how long? Bergoglio is leaving no church stone unturned.
