“...this is perhaps the largest facility built by the whole world with public money.”

Amazing what can be built when (other people’s) money is no object.

It is stunning but it looks like it was built in the middle of nowhere.

It is beautiful. Does the U.S. have anything like it?

A cathedral dedicated to just the US military? Not to my knowledge.

The phrase “if you build it, they will come” rings true here.

We have Chapels/Cathedrals at each of the academies. Here are pics of the one at USNA that I’m familiar with (John Paul Jones’ crypt lies below it.

Nobody could walk into that church without feeling a sense of reverence.......I think most of our new churches today look like high school stadiums complete with snack bars and gift shops. They've lost that sense of reverence when you walk in the doors, rather it's like you're going too be entertained..

Sadly, the US Military is more likely to build a mosque than a church. It would take President Trump another 2 terms to expunge all the politically correct career-climbers that have infested the military.

    Excellent comment, caww.

A long discussion could be held on this notion of "reverence".

The mark of our tech-driven world is endless conveniences, instant gratification, and efficiency. There's less time to appreciate and build things with great reverence and care.

Emerson had some words say on the subject:

The influence of fine scenery, the presence of mountains, appeases our irritations and elevates our friendships.

Even a high dome, and the expansive interior of a cathedral, have a sensible effect on manners. I have heard that stiff people lose some of their awkwardness under high ceilings, and in spacious halls.

I think, sculpture and painting have an effect to teach us manners, and abolish hurry.

Culture from The Conduct of Life (1860, rev. 1876)

I watched a group of people being Baptized in one of the modern churches. They had set up a small swimming pool ‘in the large main lobby’ for what should have been a special occasion.

People were mulling around in the lobby, coffee shop etc. as if nothing at all special was occurring. I was heartbroken there was no attention given to this occasion. There was so much talking and buzzing noise you couldn't hear the Pastor as he simply dunked each one after the other.

There was zero ‘reverence’ given to this occasion.

Never to take away man made sculpture and paintings from this list, but do require we add to it, the majesty of our CREATOR.

Having had the experience of visiting one of HIS Creations, Carlsbad Caverns, one is unable to walk away without realizing just what they had witnessed. ROCK OF AGES, a Holy Place actually made by Him.

I grew up with the Latin Mass as a Catholic. Was an altar boy for several years. It was wonderful training in reverence shown by the priests.

The sanctity of life was given by the Creator, but it’s up to wise men and women to cultivate respect for what set in motion. A Christian people founded America and wrote its Constitution. Let’s see if we can preserve what they handed down to us.

Now, while my Japanese wife was born a Christian, her great reverence for her daily work was mostly learned from the culture she was raised in — and her customer service training as tour guide in Southern Japan. I still have much to learn from her.
