Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

If today's Hebrew Worship Word looks and sounds familiar, it should! Back when we were in Psalm 119, and were studying the individual letters in the Hebrew Alphabet, we encountered this word when looking at the Letter Yud. We saw that Yud was the initial letter in such words as "Praise", "Hand", and, especially God's Holy Name. The root of Yadah is Yad. which is the word for Hand. It would indicate that our hands are used in Worship.

The lifting of hands in worship is as old as human history. In ancient Egyptian painting, the pose of Pharaoh lifting both hands, palms outward, means that he is worshiping his god. Lest we attribute this pose to only pagan sources, let's note that early Christian Art shows people praying in a similar manner. Art Historians call this the "Orant (Praying) Pose".

While this posture may have died out over the years in the congregations, it has never stopped as part of the Liturgies of various Christian Denominations. In the instructions for performing the Liturgies, there were physical directions written in red beside the text. These red directions came to be known as rubics, (meaning red letters!) and are as much a part of the Liturgy as the Text itself.

In the Twentieth Century, people started lifting hands again. Whether this is a result of Charismatic Renewal, Revival, or lively music, I would not venture to say. Some groups never stopped doing this, and are amused when they see formerly formal, dour, and dignified worshipers lifting their hands in prayer. It's alright, folks...it's Scriptural to do so!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America!

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Eek...another spelling error! Should be rubrics, not "rubics".

"Rubic's is a CUBE."

So many of the “frozen chosen” resist the Yadah.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem.

And during these days when your hands are frequently washed or soaked in sanitizer. ;)
