Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Psalms

Psalm 144

Of David.

1 Praise be to the Lord my Rock,
    who trains my hands for war,
    my fingers for battle.
2 He is my loving God and my fortress,
    my stronghold and my deliverer,
my shield, in whom I take refuge,
    who subdues peoples[a] under me.

3 Lord, what are human beings that you care for them,
    mere mortals that you think of them?
4 They are like a breath;
    their days are like a fleeting shadow.

5 Part your heavens, Lord, and come down;
    touch the mountains, so that they smoke.
6 Send forth lightning and scatter the enemy;
    shoot your arrows and rout them.
7 Reach down your hand from on high;
    deliver me and rescue me
from the mighty waters,
    from the hands of foreigners
8 whose mouths are full of lies,
    whose right hands are deceitful.

9 I will sing a new song to you, my God;
    on the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you,
10 to the One who gives victory to kings,
    who delivers his servant David.

From the deadly sword 11 deliver me;
    rescue me from the hands of foreigners
whose mouths are full of lies,
    whose right hands are deceitful.

12 Then our sons in their youth
    will be like well-nurtured plants,
and our daughters will be like pillars
    carved to adorn a palace.
13 Our barns will be filled
    with every kind of provision.
Our sheep will increase by thousands,
    by tens of thousands in our fields;
14     our oxen will draw heavy loads.[b]
There will be no breaching of walls,
    no going into captivity,
    no cry of distress in our streets.
15 Blessed is the people of whom this is true;
    blessed is the people whose God is the Lord.

and let All That is Within Me Bless His Most Holy Name!
Abba Father, Blessed Are You,
Oh LORD, Our God!
King of the Universe,
Ancient of Days,
Rock of All Ages!
It is You, and You Alone,
Who Created All Things,
And You Alone Who Know The End from The Beginning,
And the Beginning from The End.

Thank You, Dear Father For Your Holy Word!
Thank You For Your Precious Inspired Glorious Plan and Promise,
Which You Have preserved for us to this day!
Thank You For Training Our Hands and Fingers For Battle,
Both of a Physical Nature,
And of a Spiritual Nature.
Your Word is Our Sword, and You Are Our Shield.

LORD, We Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Beseech You on Behalf of Our Captive Brethren,
Christians and Jews,
In Bondage in Hostile lands.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH For Our Brethren Of All Faiths Throughout The World Suffering Persecution.

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

I just finished a novel called "The Invisible World." It had nothing to do with today's Psalm, but the title was rather ironic considering that we are now in a war against a Virus, which is, of course, too small to see.

Psalm 144, a Psalm of David, is often quoted by soldiers, commandos, and other warriors. It is appropriate to do so, but as recent events have shown us, we are in conflict with invisible enemies. This Psalm is applicable to all situations, both in the physical and spiritual realm.

David's style is evident in the first stanza. After praising God for his training as a Warrior, David echoes his own Psalm 18 and gives us a list of Names for God:

My Rock
My Fortress
My Deliverer
My Shield
My Refuge

In the next stanza, David explores the relationship between God and Man. While God is a Rock, a Fortress, a Shield, and a Refuge (All Very Strong, Stable, and Protective things), Man is like a breath, a shadow, a wisp of air. We are blown this way and that by every rumor, innuendo, and piece of fake news. Even things that are invisible can bring us down.

In the next stanza, David cries out for Deliverance. We have met David the Warrior in the first stanza, and now, in verses 9 and 10, we meet David the Musician. He declares: "I will sing a new song, I will play the 10-String Lyre". The hands and fingers that have been trained for war now play the harp, and the strident shouts of battle become a sweet song.

Verses 12-15 sing of the peace, health, and prosperity that are the results of God's Blessings. The Psalm that begins with the agony of War ends up with the Joy of Victory that can only come from God Himself.
