At a time when patients and staff are desperate for hope, many spiritual leaders must offer their solace from a distance.
As medical facilities restrict visitors and ration protective gear amid the coronavirus pandemic, more hospital chaplains have been forced to do their job at a distance, while ministering to an onslaught of weary patients, families, and health care staff.
“Due to supply shortages of masks, this means that isolation rooms may involve phone calls, notes, letters, a wave through the door rather than (a chaplain being) inside the room,” said Heidi Greider, manager of spiritual care at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Though individual institutions ultimately determine their own policies, guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention play a factor. CDC guidance issued in February urged facilities to limit visitors, and as the outbreak has worsened, hospitals with COVID-19 patients have continued to tighten restrictions, including on chaplains.
Tim Kinnersley, lead chaplain at Northside Hospital Cherokee in Canton, Georgia, just got word this week that his hospital put a hold on all in-person chaplain visits to reduce the number of potential carriers coming in and out of the facility.
His case is not an anomaly. Another chaplain recalled how over two weeks her hospital went from allowing any guests to only permitting visits in end-of-life situations. In some cases, even medical staff are limited to one or two per room when the patient is known to be infected.
As the pandemic spread, CT heard reports of chaplains losing access to facilities—hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, and prisons—across the country, including in New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, Florida, Texas, and Kansas.

I’m a volunteer law enforcement chaplain - all but our two paid guys - one in the jail and one on the LE side have been ordered to stand down and shelter in place.
This ain’t the flu, guys - it’s like nothing we’ve seen since 1918.
Priests can’t even administer the Sacrament of the Sick?

Unless you are part of the elderly, or have pre-existing conditions, the flu will most likely not kill you. Young adults with the coronavirus might experience no symptoms, or mild symptoms, meaning they might be unaware they are spreading the disease. The CDC recommends that older adults stay home as much as possible and stock at least 30 days of groceries. Those in that advanced age group who do go out should keep space between themselves and others, stay away from people who are sick, and avoid crowds and cruise and air travel.
Elderly people are likely at higher risk because immune systems weaken with age. Older adults are also more likely to have underlying health conditions that exacerbate illness. Roughly, 80% of the deaths of this illness are over 60. Just use common sense. It beats he he(( out of fear actions or panic which is the intent of those that foster it.

No. Bubonic Plague is highly dangerous, regardless of your condition, and it killed 30% of Europe. The POPULATION. Extrapolate that easily to 40% death rate. Probably conservative.
Take modern medical advancements into consideration maybe we can cut that in half. 20% death rate? This isn’t even close.

So how is this plague WORSE than the bubonic plague?
And, this isn't the 14th century.
Maybe that ONE NURSE didn't do her homework on that 14th century plague that killed so many people for so long.
That plague was from China as well.
Again....that plague lasted for five years.

I live in Washington State that our moron governor closed the lids on us. But we are allowed to go out after groceries, drugs and other life needing things.
I find it interesting that prisoners even have to stay in their jail cells and are led to dinner. But they have to work making license plates. So I guess it’s a “break even.”
Glad someone from my era is relatively healthy. Don’t worry, I make up for you in the issues department. Except for doctor’s appointments, I haven’t left the house for a month, at least. Gettin’ cabin fever.
