Washington Lt. Gov. Cyrus Habib to Leave Office, Join the Jesuits

Washington D.C., Mar 19, 2020 / 02:30 pm (CNA).- The lieutenant governor of Washington announced on Thursday that he will not seek re-election and instead will enter the Society of Jesus this autumn.

Lt. Gov. Cyrus Habib (D), 38, will end his eight-year career in public office after what he described as “two years of careful and prayerful discernment” led him to apply to join the Jesuits.

Habib, who was elected lieutenant governor in 2016, is the highest-ranking Iranian-American elected official in the United States.

As his discernment process was “almost entirely private,” Habib said that he expected many of his constituents and supporters would find his decision to be a “major surprise,” particularly he was considered by many to have a bright political future.

“Many will be wondering why someone who has spent the last eight years climbing the political ladder and who has a not insignificant chance of acceding to the governorship next year, would trade a life of authority for one of obedience,” Habib said in an essay explaining his decision in America magazine, which is published by the Society of Jesus.

In the essay, he credited his Catholic faith for initially motivating him to enter politics, and for guiding his decisions in office.

Aren’t there Jesuit priests? Pardon my ignorance of Catholic entities, but, isn’t this man Catholic and joining a Catholic oriented organization by joining Jesuits?

If Jesuits aren’t Catholic, what are they?

Yes, the Jesuits are all priests. I was educated by them at Santa Clara and sent my son to one of their high schools, having first up armored him against their political views. I’ve yet to meet one who isn’t a left wing hack

You don't seem to know much about the Jesuits, do you?

:)

To us “real” Catholics, the Jesuits have been liberal apostates for many years. To the rest of the world, they look Catholic and claim to be. That Habib is joining them tells you all you need to know.

Not all are priests - some are brothers.

Fr. Mitch Pacwa is not a left wing hack and there are many others. Unfortunately, there are way more that are very left wing.

Hey! There ARE some Catholic Jesuits. There's Ignatius Press publisher Fr. Joseph Fessio SJ. And --- umm-- umm---

They have Brothers, and also a wing for the laity, called the Ignatian Associates. The latter includes women.

The Jesuits have been a problem for a long long time.

I can remember members of my stained glass Catholic relatives saying Those Damned Jesuits 50 years ago.

There was an EXCELLENT program on tonight on EWTN called "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" and it was about how the American communists got some (idiot) priests to buy into the Commie ideal.
Many Americans bought into it too.

The movement was finally quashed but there were some ugly times for a while.

I knew two great Jesuits, but they were old school.

Fr Thomas Savage was a missionary Jesuit to the parishes of Mammoth Lakes, Lee Vining, and Bridgeport. He used to sleep with his rifle, smoked cigars, drank whiskey, and told great stories.

Fr Thomas McGovern was a tutor at Thomas Aquinas College, was an avid sportsman, and was a Thomistic theologian.

The modern Jesuits have followed the spirit of the age, and Teilhard de Chardin.

No offense to the padre. I’m sure you’re right. My point was meant literally in that I have personally known tons of Jesuits and to a man they were hacks

From politician to Jesuit? When it comes to defending the truth, a step down.
