Church grants special indulgence to coronavirus patients and caregivers
Vatican News ^ | 20 March 2020 | Fr. Benedict Mayaki, SJ

The Apostolic Penitentiary issues a Decree granting special plenary indulgences for those suffering from the coronavirus pandemic, if specific conditions are met. By Fr. Benedict Mayaki, SJ

On 20 March, the Apostolic Penitentiary issued a decree granting plenary indulgences to “the faithful suffering from the Covid-19 virus, commonly known as coronavirus, as well as to healthcare workers, family members and all those who in any capacity, including through prayer, care for them.”

The document comes in response to pastoral, spiritual and sacramental concerns for those affected by the coronavirus pandemic, which has raised “new uncertainties and above all widespread physical and moral suffering”.

The decree is signed by Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, the Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary, and the Regent, Father Krzysztof Nykiel.

Son one has to do a bunch of works to receive this "indulgence"?

Completely contrary to Scripture which notes Christ is the payment for all of our sins.

There is nothing left to pay or do....except to believe in Him.

This is the kind of crap that drove Martin Luther crazy.

Absolutely. You get a pass, but you have to do a, b, c. No, no, no. Nowhere in the Bible, especially in Jesus’ teaching, do these appear. Jesus said to pray. Who to pray to? ‘Our Father who is in heaven’. Not Mary, not our ancestors, not Buddha. Trust in Jesus, pray unceasingly.

Amen to that.

I was raised Roman Catholic, but it has only been within the last few years that I discovered that, theologically, I’ve been confessional Lutheran all my life.

It also helps that the pastor of our local LCMS church is a friend of mine.

Another unbiblical move by the cult. Only GOD saves, cures, blesses, not a priest or a pope. They are just mere humans, just like the rest of us. GOD does not give them special privileges or powers to heal or cure. I’ll stay with HIM, not them.

If you had something else, does it still work?

If you recover from the corona, do you get to keep it?

Quaeritur:
- Whether sin has a temporal consequence as well as an eternal?

- Whether the temporal consequence is removed by Christ’s removal of the eternal?

- Whether anyone can remove the temporal consequence?

- Whether the authority to remit or retain sins given to Peter and to the Eleven (John 20) pertains only to the eternal or to the temporal consequence of sin, on the one hand, or to both?

- Whether (and how, if at all) a gift can be said to be earned?

These are some of the questions I can think of.

For sure, can you imagine living in Italy right now? Would we dare offer help to those in that situation ? Putting ourselves at risk like that ?..Family for sure we would hope.....
Courage is great virtue until it calls upon us.... Though Christ does know our weak and failed nature.... .

12 This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you. 13 Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 You are my friends, if you do the things that I command you.

Way beyond "plenary".......... Even for the anti's-

If you had bothered to read the decree, you would have noticed that the only required “works” are ... prayers.

There is nothing left to pay or do....except to believe in Him.

Why does "believe in Him" get a pass? Either he paid it all and I don't have to do ANYTHING ... or he didn't. Make up your mind. "Don't have to do anything" means "don't have to do anything", not "don't have to do anything, except for the following footnotes, exceptions, and qualifications".

If you get to make exceptions, then so do we.

Incidentally, indulgences remit the "temporal punishment" due to sin, which, by definition, is that part of the penalty that (a) God wishes us to pay, for our own good; and (b) we are capable of paying. We are not capable of paying the eternal debt due to sin, which is why that was paid for us on the Cross.

Because that's what HE said to do.

16“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

17“For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.

18“He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:16-18 NASB

There are no exceptions being made.

The "temporal punishment" of sin has already been paid.

13When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Colossians 2:13-14 NASB

The sacrifice of Christ on the Cross is either completely sufficient for the forgiveness of ALL sins or it isn't.

There is no in-between....there are no exceptions.

GOD does not give them special privileges ...

How do you construe these?

19 I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Mt 16:19

22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Spirit: 23 whose soever sins ye forgive, they are forgiven unto them; whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
John 20

IF:
The sacrifice of Christ on the Cross is either completely sufficient for the forgiveness of ALL sins or it isn't.

THEN:
21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."
22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

ELSE:
We err in second guessing Christ.....

The error is not understanding the Scriptures in CONTEXT.

Fast forward to Acts.

6The apostles and the elders came together to look into this matter. 7After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brethren, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and believe. Acts 15:6-7 NASB

It is the belief in Christ that forgives the sins of people. If the people reject Christ their sins are not forgiven.

Sins cannot be forgiven for anyone who is NOT a believer in Christ.

Perhaps all of the enraged Protestants who posted here should see what an indulgence actually is before the usual accusations are hurled? There is an obvious lack of understanding evidenced by these posts.

I hope this helps explain indulgences. Let me know if you have any questions.
