Poll Shows Pope’s Country Doesn’t Know What the Church Does, Doesn’t Go to Mass

ROSARIO, Argentina - As bishops from Pope Francis’s native Argentina figure out how to pay their own salaries instead of taking funds from the state, a new poll shows that while seven in ten Argentines declare themselves to be Catholic, six in ten don’t know what activities the Church is doing in the country and seven in ten attend Mass less than once a month.

At first glance, the results of the study, commissioned by the bishops after they announced the progressive end of public funding for the Church late last year, aren’t all bad news: 67 percent of Argentines identify as Catholic, and most know the main missions of the Church: Evangelization, education and guidance, providing spiritual and emotional support, and material aid.

In addition, seven in ten Argentines believe that the basic sense of religion is to give meaning to life in this world.

Yet only 16 percent of Catholics attend Mass weekly and just 13 percent more do so once a month, while 49 percent attend less than once a month and 22 percent never go to church unless it’s for a wedding or a baptism.

Seven in ten people in Pope Francis’s home country claim they’re “little or not at all” familiar with the activities of the Catholic Church in the country, and the number goes down only slightly among Catholics, six in ten. This means they don’t know about the Church’s hospitals, homes for the elderly, schools, social work in the slums, and more.

Five out in ten Argentines believe that the main beneficiary of the Church’s work are religious - bishops, priests and nuns - and only 21 percent say the institution helps lay Catholics, while just 17 percent believe the Church helps the entire country.

As a Catholic I estimate going to church 2 to 4 times a years in the past 20 years.

I’d like to know whose panties on FR are in a twist about that.

If it bothers you so much why even be Catholic?

Be non-Denom and do your own thing.

God Bless You and the other all day Pope Hater.

Glad to see that the gov. Is no longer collecting taxes for the Church in that nation. I many times think that the teachings of Jesus Christ are important. I hope that those who claim to be Christians will consider that the teachings of Christ are important.

That may be but they sure as heck know about Climate Change because that is what the Pope is concerned about . . and open borders.

It's not the Pope's fault as ALL the countries south of our border are NOMINAL CATHOLICS, that is, Catholic in name only. That's been par for the course for a long time.

Now, when erstwhile Mass attendees get sick or need help they will beg and plead with God to help them...maybe even promising all kinds of things that they MIGHT not fulfill.

So it goes with our flawed human nature.

God gave us the ten commandments and ... free will.
You can take it up with Him when you die. Then you can explain to him why the 3rd commandment [not "suggestion"] was so useless to you.

What YOU do is your business. End of story.

I don't take religious instruction from a someone who doesn't even have a clue what the third commandment is:
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

Was the 3rd Law of the 10 commandments (there were about 240 of those that Moses brought down from the burning bush) a teaching of Jesus Christ? Did Jesus Christ mention in his teachings the commandment to not eat shellfish?

OK.
Lets start with Jesus rebuking Moses on divorce.
Then let's acknowledge that Jesus updated the ten commandments from the Old Testament (which are still useful) with his own two in the New Testament.

Namely:
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

What have you got now?

It’s a bit sick you think you have the power to put the fear of Hell into people coming from your own hatred.

What are you talking about? The burning bush incident happened well before the Exodus even occurred. Moses brought nothing “down from the burning bush”. Further, only 10 of God’s commandments were inscribed by his act on the stone tablets which were subsequently kept in the ark. And finally, yes, Jesus did speak to the dietary laws - he pronounced all foods clean, including shellfish. It’s right there in the book of Mark.
