Psalm 121

A song of ascents.

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
    where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

You Alone Are Worthy of Praise, Honor, Glory and Worship,

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

The Second Song Of Ascents Carries the Famous Line,

"Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.

It Is particularly Musical and Poetic when Sung in Hebrew:

Hinei Lo Yanum V'lo Yeshan Shomer Yisroel

This Song of Ascents is composed as a dialogue. It may be a Liturgical Responsorial Psalm, an Antiphon, or a dialogue within the heart. It is neatly arranged in four couplets and uses the Classic Hebrew Poetic device of contrasts. Each Stanza has an opening line, which is developed further in the second line of the couplet. The whole Psalm is a confession of trust in the Lord.

Here are the opposites expressed in each stanza:

1. "I will lift up my eyes, "To"
"My help comes "From"

2. "Watchfulness" vs. "Sleep"

3. "Sun by Day" vs "Moon by Night"

4. "Coming" and "Going"
"Now" and "Forever".
