Septuagesima Sunday 2020: Pre-LENT begins! Get your head into gear.

In the traditional Roman calendar this Sunday is called Septuagesima, Latin for the “Seventieth” day before Easter.

The number 70 is more symbolic than arithmetical...For example, Septuagesima is the 63rd day before Easter and, therefore, it in the 7th (septimus) decade or 10-day period before Easter

The Sundays which follow are Sexagesima (“sixtieth”) and Quinquagesima (“fiftieth”) before Ash Wednesday brings in Lent, called in Latin Quadragesima, “Fortieth”.

These ancient pre-Lenten Sundays prepare us for the discipline of Lent, which once was far stricter.

Sometimes I talk about “situational awareness”. That involves more than just looking around right here and right now. It also involves gaming scenarios out in your head. That’s just smart. Pre-Lent helps us to get our heads into the game before Lent starts.

SEPTUAGESIMA

“Septuagesima” means “seventy,” and Septuagesima Sunday comes roughly seventy days before Easter.

This seventy represents the seventy years of the Babylonian Captivity.

Septuagesima and Lent are both times of penance; Septuagesima being a time of voluntary fasting in preparation for the obligatory Great Fast of Lent.

The theme is the Babylonian exile, the “mortal coil” we must endure as we await the Heavenly Jerusalem. Sobriety and somberness reign liturgically...

Yes thank you! I will be supplementing this season with reading from Orthodox sources as well, as I appreciate the Orthodox commitment to traditions of fasting in particular.

Having observed Great Lent fasting with or faith-kinfolks the Russian Orthodox for 10 years, I must go on record saying we Catholics are wimps.

And I the wimpiest of the wimps.

But I'm going to try to gear up this year. Thanks for the subtle kick in the pants called Septuagesima.

“I the wimpiest of the wimps.”

THAT is the perfect way to enter into Septuagesima/Lenten Triodion on this Sunday of the Pharisee and the Publican!
