Democrat presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg insisted again this week that he can be a Christian and support abortion on demand.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, the South Bend, Indiana mayor tried to justify his stance by claiming the Bible associates the beginning of life with breath.
The Washington Examiner reports Buttigieg has been accused of cherry-picking biblical teachings on a number of issues. He responded to the accusations by claiming the Bible is inconsistent internally and Christians have to make their own sense out of it.
Well, I think for a lot of us certainly for me any encounter with Scripture includes some process of sorting out what connects you with God versus what simply tells you about the morals of the times when it was written, he told the magazine.
And to me, thats not so much cherry-picking as just being serious, because of course theres so many things in Scripture that are inconsistent internally, and youve got to decide what sense to make of it, Buttigieg continued. Jesus speaks so often in hyperbole and parable, in mysterious code, that in my experience, theres simply no way that a literal understanding of Scripture can fit into the Bible that I find in my hands.
On the issue of abortion, Buttigieg said he believes the Bible does not recognize the beginning of life until the first breath is taken.
Theres so many parts of the Bible that associate the beginning of life with breath, he said, reiterating a similar statement he made in September.
At the time, he told The Breakfast Club that abortion is obviously a tough issue for a lot of people to think through morally. Then again, theres a lot of parts of the Bible that talk about how life begins with breath, and so even that is something that we can interpret differently.
Interestingly, abortionist and convicted murderer Kermit Gosnell used a very similar biblical argument to defend infanticide in 2015.
I think its Genesis 2:7, expresses the breath of life as the beginning of life that God breathed breath breathed life into Adam. The Bible, to me, is very clear that life does not happen until breath, Gosnell said, defending himself as innocent in a documentary about his crimes.
Buttigiegs biblical justification for abortion has been called out as absurd by his own family and many others. Even in ancient times, babies in the womb were viewed as valuable, as is evident in Luke 1:41. Jesus placed great value on children when others in society did not in Matthew 19:14, and Proverbs 6:16-17 states that one of the things God hates most is the shedding of innocent blood. One of the ten commandments prohibits murder.
Buttigieg is no moderate on abortion. As mayor of South Bend, he tried to stop a pregnancy resource center from opening down the street from an abortion facility. Then, earlier this year, he celebrated when an abortion chain that amassed dozens of health and safety violations opened a new location there.
In May, when asked about abortions in the third trimester, Buttigieg said he thinks they should be legal and unrestricted.
Luckily, I don’t take religious advice from salami smugglers.
Bugger that...
“Before I formed you in the womb,I knew you.”
Pete needs to stop trying to use the Bible,he’s just digging a deeper hole.
WOW Petey, Book, chapter and verse please.
If we aborted puppies this way, the same people defending late abortions would be in an uproar.
Life is in the blood.
Such a literal reading. A generous interpretation might allow breath to mean the use of oxygen, and extend protection to our littlest brothers and sisters. But you how those fundamentalists are, no science at all.
I wish someone had aborted his mother.
Biblically illiterate imbecile. Life begins at conception.
Book of Luke-Chapter 1
39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit:
42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
Buttplug is far from a fundamentalist, about as far as you can get. About as far as Heaven is from Hell in fact.
Brother Loves Butt Traveling Salvation Show?
He is despicable. He uses the Bible like a prop.
I hope Buttplug keeps repeating his evil thoughts, he will NEVER get votes from millions of true Bible-believing Christians.
Hubris is exaggerated pride or overinflated self-confidence. Pride is a sin, according to the Bible, and so hubris is also sinful.
Men in the Bible who were filled with hubris include King Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4:30), King Belshazzar (Daniel 5:20), Goliath (1 Samuel 17:4144), the rich fool in Jesus parable (Luke 12:1620), and King Herod (Acts 12:2123). All of these men were judged by God for their sin of pride
Killing babies is what liberals are about. Nothing more evil.
Maybe he can quote chapter and verse(s)?
It was a joke. He goes for a literal reading (breath) when it suits his purposes, and he’ll weave something out of thin air and left field when it suits, completely contrary to scripture, like the permissibility of homosexual acts and the sanctity of gay marriage.

Psalm 139:13-16
For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mothers womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.
