Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Music in The Bible)

Exodus 15

The Song of Moses and Miriam

15 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:

“I will sing to the Lord,
    for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
    he has hurled into the sea.

2 “The Lord is my strength and my defense[a];
    he has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him,
    my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
3 The Lord is a warrior;
    the Lord is his name.

4 Pharaoh’s chariots and his army
    he has hurled into the sea.
The best of Pharaoh’s officers
    are drowned in the Red Sea.[b]
5 The deep waters have covered them;
    they sank to the depths like a stone.
6 Your right hand, Lord,
    was majestic in power.
Your right hand, Lord,
    shattered the enemy.

7 “In the greatness of your majesty
    you threw down those who opposed you.
You unleashed your burning anger;
    it consumed them like stubble.
8 By the blast of your nostrils
    the waters piled up.
The surging waters stood up like a wall;
    the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.
9 The enemy boasted,
    ‘I will pursue, I will overtake them.
I will divide the spoils;
    I will gorge myself on them.
I will draw my sword
    and my hand will destroy them.’
10 But you blew with your breath,
    and the sea covered them.
They sank like lead
    in the mighty waters.
11 Who among the gods
    is like you, Lord?
Who is like you—
    majestic in holiness,
awesome in glory,
    working wonders?

12 “You stretch out your right hand,
    and the earth swallows your enemies.
13 In your unfailing love you will lead
    the people you have redeemed.
In your strength you will guide them
    to your holy dwelling.
14 The nations will hear and tremble;
    anguish will grip the people of Philistia.
15 The chiefs of Edom will be terrified,
    the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling,
the people[c] of Canaan will melt away;
16     terror and dread will fall on them.
By the power of your arm
    they will be as still as a stone—
until your people pass by, Lord,
    until the people you bought[d] pass by.
17 You will bring them in and plant them
    on the mountain of your inheritance—
the place, Lord, you made for your dwelling,
    the sanctuary, Lord, your hands established.

18 “The Lord reigns
    for ever and ever.”

19 When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen[e] went into the sea, the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. 20 Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing. 21 Miriam sang to them:

“Sing to the Lord,
    for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
    he has hurled into the sea.”

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father In Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
You Alone Are Worthy To Be Praised And Worshiped,
For Your Alone Are Holy,
Righteous,
and Infinitely Just!
You Are Eternally Faithful,
and there is no Shadow of Turning with You.
Light and Darkness Can Not Occupy The Same Space,
and There is No Darkness With You.
Good and Evil Can Not Dwell Together,
And There is No Evil With You.
Yet You Always Judge Rightly,
With Grace and Truth,
Justice and Mercy,
Wisdom and Kindness,
Firmness and Gentleness.

LORD, You desire Truth in Our Inward Parts.
There is no way we can hide from You,
what is going on inside,
no matter what we say with our lips. That being said,
And Even as You Know Every thought,
You STILL Open Your Everlasting Arms to hold us,
To be Our Strong Tower,
Our Only Refuge,
Our Rock and our Redeemer.
There is no other.

Father, We Pray This Prayer For America,
For Israel,
and For Ourselves.
Though Our sins be as Scarlet,
purge them,
that our hearts may be white as sparkling,
fresh, new-fallen snow.
For the Sake of Your Name, we Plead
So that the enemy of our souls will not say,
"Aha, Their God has forsaken them!".
May it Never Be, Oh LORD!

We pray For the Peace of Jerusalem,
According to Your Will,
Your Word,
And Your Promise.

We Pray For Our President,
And other Leaders of Our Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
To do the Right Thing.
We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

An American Art Form, known as the "Broadway Musical", has undergone many changes over the years. Not quite like it's European ancestor, the Musical was not completely "operatic", as the music was infused with "Americana" (Ragtime, Jazz, Blues, Folk, etc) and there was spoken dialogue between the musical numbers. The themes were usually lighter than opera as well, with the finale celebrating a conclusion rather than having dead bodies littering the stage. Our Own Free Republic Canteen has a wonderful music thread every weekend that tells the history of American Musical better than I ever could.

In the early days of the Musical, the plots were wafer-thin and just served to frame the musical numbers, which were often lavish and overdone. This was OK because of the "Fourth Wall" in live performances. The audience suspends their disbelief and are able to accept the fact that people are singing rather than speaking to each other.

With the advent of Sound Movies, the American Musical was the obvious choice. This transition from Silent to Sound Movie-making is hilariously portrayed in the Classic Movie Singing In The Rain. The movie shows the difficulty in transferring the stage musical onto the silver screen. There are some terrific musical numbers in this movie, but, let's face it. People don't just burst into song like that in real life!

Or Do They?

Chapter 15 of the Book of Exodus happens right after the Hebrews cross the Red Sea, and the Egyptian Army is drowned in its depths. Upon reaching the other shore, Moses bursts into song. Miriam gathers the women and they all pick up their tambourines and dance. It's a big production number! The difference between this and a musical is that the song and dance are in praise to the Lord. It is a song of Victory, but it is God's Victory. In fact, the Holy Name of YHVH is sung ten times in this song. It is God's Covenant Name with His People. The Song has five verses, the first four celebrating Deliverance and the fifth prophesying victory in the Promised Land.

Cecille B. DeMille wisely chose not to include this "Production Number" in his movie The Ten Commandments. He saved his production skills for the big "Golden Calf Scene" which is tomorrow's subject.

But, did you know that there is a Musical based on the Ten Commandments? I've seen it. It's a little strange, to say the least!

Nevertheless, Moses and Miriam actually DID "burst into song" on that amazing day.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the purposes of His heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people He has chosen as His inheritance! (Psalm 33)

Re: the Fourth Wall: “West Side Story,” the movie, was the subject of a conversation among my teen-aged friends. Anthony commented, “Ya ready to have a fight, and all of a sudden everybody starts to pirouette all over the place. Aw, c’mon, guys!” (Sometimes the magic works, and sometimes it doesn’t.)

Indeed. One of my students starred in WWS as Anita. The Rumble Scene was problematical.

Amen.

The Priestly Blessing

22 The Lord said to Moses, 23 “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:

24
“‘“The Lord bless you
and keep you;
25
the Lord make his face shine on you
and be gracious to you;
26
the Lord turn his face toward you
and give you peace.”’

27 “So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”

Heavy sigh. I grew up on musicals in the 50s and 60s. Living in NYC at the time, we saw many of them, memorized the songs and even took part in school and community performances of them as well! Very fond memories of the “and they all lived happily ever after” shows.

Broadway has gotten very “dark” over the years. I guess they feel that they have to push the envelope in order to remain relevant in this modern age.

Rodgers and Hammerstein were not afraid to tackle weighty themes in their musicals. “South Pacific” and “Sound of Music” were about WW2. Both “The King and I” and “South Pacific” addressed racism and the clash of cultures.

As adults, we don’t mind being challenged in this way, but if the music is wonderful and uplifting, it is a shared experience, and edifies the audience.

When a show is just a political screed with lousy music, it’s a wasted evening, unless the spending of hundreds of dollars on a politically-correct but mediocre production gives the audience member some kind of self-righteous satisfaction. :-)

((((But don’t ask me how I REALLY feel! HA HA HA))))
