Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

2 Kings 14

Jeroboam II King of Israel

23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam son of Jehoash king of Israel became king in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years. 24 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit. 25 He was the one who restored the boundaries of Israel from Lebo Hamath to the Dead Sea,[e] in accordance with the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, spoken through his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher.

26 The Lord had seen how bitterly everyone in Israel, whether slave or free, was suffering;[f] there was no one to help them. 27 And since the Lord had not said he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Jehoash.

28 As for the other events of Jeroboam’s reign, all he did, and his military achievements, including how he recovered for Israel both Damascus and Hamath, which had belonged to Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 29 Jeroboam rested with his ancestors, the kings of Israel. And Zechariah his son succeeded him as king.

After reading today's Passage, I did a search online using the Key Words "wanted to name baby hitler" and came up with pages and pages of news stories. It seems that there is a small but very sick subculture that embraces nazism, and names their innocent babies after the monsters of the third reich. Ironically, this came to the forefront when a baker in England refused to decorate a birthday cake for a baby named "hitler". Apparently, in the UK, there are at least ten baby names that are illegal.

Personally, I think it's horrible to give a baby a name that will haunt them forever. It is not just neo-nazis that do this. The iconic musician Frank Zappa named two of his children "Dweezil" and "Moon Unit". Dweezil has been able to make a nice career playing his dad's music, but I understand that Moon-Unit has legally changed her name.

In some Native-American cultures, a person doesn't get his or her name until that person does something that distinguishes himself. An elder from a Plains Tribe, with whom I had become a daily online friend, gave me the name "Day-Brightener" because, he said, "I brightened his day" with my correspondence. He has since passed on, and the site through which we communicated is now defunct, but I am still proud of that name.

Now this brings us to Today's passage. In the Books of Kings and Chronicles, the Inspired writers use two names to describe the parade of good and bad kings. "David" is the standard for the good kings, and "Jeroboam" is the standard for the bad ones. And here we have a king named "Jeroboam II"! That's just ASKING for trouble!

And yet, God's grace is extended to the People of Israel even during this horrible reign. The Assyrians are keeping the King or Aram at bay, and Israel is even allowed to extend its territory a bit during this time. God's Sovereignty combined with His Mercy extends to all of His People, whether slave or free, and He sends Prophets to guide the people. The Prophet Jonah is mentioned during this period, and we will see other names come up. This will be helpful in the study of the so-called "Minor" Prophets, who weren't "minor" at all, but just wrote shorter books than the "Major Prophets".
