The Government has appointed an independent expert to lead the process towards a formal definition of Islamophobia after faith leaders, academics and politicians warned that free speech could be at risk.
Imam Qari Asim, Deputy Chair of the Anti-Muslim Hatred Working Group, will spearhead the work on establishing a definition of Islamophobia after the Government rejected the one drawn up by a cross-party group of MPs last May.
The rejected APPG definition reads: "Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness."
This definition has been formally adopted by the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats, the Scottish Conservatives, Plaid Cymru and the Mayor of London.
A letter of opposition to Home Secretary Sajid Javid was signed by a wide range of academics, faith leaders, journalists, politicians and campaigners, including Professor Richard Dawkins, Lord Alton, Lord Singh, Baroness Cox, Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, the President of Hindu Forum of Britain Trupti Patel, Christian Concern's Head of Policy Tim Dieppe, and National Secular Society CEO Stephen Evans.
They said that the APPG definition was "vague and expansive", and could have negative consequences for freedom of expression, and academic and journalistic freedom.
They also argued that harmful practices and extremism were more likely to go unreported "as a result of fear of being called Islamophobic".

It is NOT irrational to fear a religion that requires its adherents to KILL EVERYONE else on the planet.
“adopted by the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats, the Scottish Conservatives, Plaid Cymru and the Mayor of London.”
All you need to know.
Trying to give a legal definition to a pejorative designed to shut down discussion. If you oppose sharia law are you an islamaphobe? Yes, then English law goes out, so goes England.

And from the article:
academics and politicians warned that free speech could be at risk.
They don't see the hypocrisy that defining this is designed to put free speech at risk.
Any use of the word “phobe” or its derivatives marks that person as ignorant and far removed from any objective thought.
With respect to the religion of death, we are not phobic. We will not tolerate their 6th century views and will give back to them in triplicate what they give to us.
PERIOD.
To target a so called religious group for following through with actions be killing those not like them is what any normal common sense person would do. If Muslims are allowed freedom to express then what about non Muslims? Or has Islam taken control of Mp’s through fear? Forgot, everything is ok as the Mp’s have their own armed details.
But FIRST, don’t they need to establish definitions of “Christophobia”, “Hebrewphobia”, “Hinduphobia, and “...phobias” for every other religion (including Atheism”)that has been attacked by Islamic JIHADIS?
Hateful “words” are one thing. Bloody murders ARE another...
IMHO, so-called “academics” should know that!
This is what happens when your country lacks a formal, written constitution that protects the citizenry from its government.
let’s read some of the orignal hate literature from the political group who seeks a global caliphate....to see if we get a better feel for the beast.
If the UK aggressively went after “Freedomphobia” then there would be no islamic problem left.
It might be better to define the term Islamist or Islamic Terrorist! That way people could use the terms advisedly. These people , however, would rather that all be kept under a blanket of fear and watch what they say at all times!
Free Speech is kind of an American idea. Brits have never been way big into Free Speech for the masses. Just ask Tommy Robinson.
Please....They made it up....There is no such thing.
I would suggest gear of being put in a situation where a person must decide to become Islamic or join the other heads rolling on the ground is a healthy thing.
A phobia is an unwarranted or irrational fear. It is neither irrational nor unwarranted to fear a system that demands you be dominated, enslaved or killed if you decline to adopt it. Therefore, Islamophobia does not exist except as a leftist buzzword.
