Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

(Old Testament)

1 Kings 20

A Prophet Condemns Ahab

35 By the word of the Lord one of the company of the prophets said to his companion, “Strike me with your weapon,” but he refused.

36 So the prophet said, “Because you have not obeyed the Lord, as soon as you leave me a lion will kill you.” And after the man went away, a lion found him and killed him.

37 The prophet found another man and said, “Strike me, please.” So the man struck him and wounded him. 38 Then the prophet went and stood by the road waiting for the king. He disguised himself with his headband down over his eyes. 39 As the king passed by, the prophet called out to him, “Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and someone came to me with a captive and said, ‘Guard this man. If he is missing, it will be your life for his life, or you must pay a talent[b] of silver.’ 40 While your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared.”

“That is your sentence,” the king of Israel said. “You have pronounced it yourself.”

41 Then the prophet quickly removed the headband from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets. 42 He said to the king, “This is what the Lord says: ‘You have set free a man I had determined should die.[c] Therefore it is your life for his life, your people for his people.’” 43 Sullen and angry, the king of Israel went to his palace in Samaria.

Footnotes:

1. 1 Kings 20:12 Or in Sukkoth; also in verse 16
2. 1 Kings 20:39 That is, about 75 pounds or about 34 kilograms
3. 1 Kings 20:42 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them.

New International Version (NIV)(End of Scripture Passage)

By pronouncing a death sentence upon the prophet, Ahab is actually condemning himself.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Just a few days ago, we read of Elijah, running away from Ahab, lying down under the broom tree, and sunk down into a profound depression. Elijah moans that he is the only believer left on the planet and that everybody wants to kill him. This kind of hyperbole is quite typical among people suffering from depression, and is called "global thinking". (You see, Psychiatrists seem to have a name for EVERYTHING!)

Anyway, God immediately reins in Elijah's complaint with the fact that He has reserved for Himself "7000 prophets who have not bowed their knee to Baal". Seven thousand may seem like a lot of people, but compared to the 33,000 seats in Boston's antique Fenway Park, can see that it is actually a small number. But it still was a viable community of people within a very hostile environment. These were people who believed in The One True God, and considered Elijah a Great Prophet. Although the Bible doesn't say so, they most likely lived in the hundreds of caves that dot the hills of Judea and Samaria, much like the Essenes at Q'umran. (Just my conjecture).

It is speculated by Bible Scholars that the "sons of the prophets" mentioned here were those very people. They also had messages for King Ahab, but no access to him...and thus this ruse of pretending to be a wounded soldier by the side of the road. The disguise was real, as the "son of the prophet" had himself struck and wounded just for the occasion.

We will never know the name of this man, but his dedication to God's Word has gone down in History forever.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

“You are like light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead it is put on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)
