In Naples, Pope Francis Warns Theologians Against ‘Collapsing’ into Ideology

ROME - Pope Francis on Friday visited the southern Italian city of Naples and participated in a theology congress dedicated to interreligious dialogue and migration in the context of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Argentine pontiff revisited some of his core concepts, calling for theologians to be an expression of a church that is a “field hospital,” and to be merciful, because without this, “our theology, our law, our pastoral care, run the risk of collapsing into bureaucratic pettiness or ideology, which by its nature wants to tame the mystery.”

The theology summit was organized by the Pontifical Catholic University, a Jesuit institution. The scope of the gathering was to discuss the impact of the pope’s Apostolic Constitution Veritatis Gaudium, on theological studies. His speech was entitled “Theology after Veritatis Gaudium in the context of the Mediterranean.”

“Theology is the expression of a church that is a ‘field hospital,’ which lives its mission of salvation and healing in the world!” Francis said.

“Mercy is not only a pastoral attitude, but it is the very substance of the Gospel of Jesus,” he said. “I encourage you to study how, in the various disciplines - dogmatic, morals, spirituality, law and so on - the centrality of mercy can be reflected,” Francis said to around 1,000 people, including students and professors.

In the journey of leaving oneself and encountering others, it is important for theologians to be “men and women of compassion, touched by the oppressed life of many, by the slavery of today, by social wounds, by violence, by wars and from the enormous injustices suffered by so many poor who live on the shores of this ‘common sea’.”

“Without communion and without compassion, constantly nourished by prayer, theology not only loses its soul, but loses its intelligence and ability to interpret reality.......

Too late, even conservatives pay more heed to the sins and virtues of isms, ists and phobias. Heck conservatives will even lead the charge against heretics to the latest and greatest isms, ists and phobias.

This pope lectures the West about mercy and compassion toward migrant aliens but is silent in addressing the violent “governments” from which they allegedly flee.

Of course the government of Holland, say, is not likely to harbor terrorists seeking to bomb the Vatican, so they can be scolded with impunity.

He does not speak out against abortion, the murder of the unborn. He does not speak out against his muzzie friends for their murder of the Jews. He probably still follows the Catholic line of thinking that the Jews were Christ killers. The Jews pushed it, but the Romans did it. In all actuality, ALL of US put Christ on that Cross. Everyone of us. Every human ever born put Christ on that Cross. We are all guilty, INCLUDING that so called vicar of Christ. HE IS NOT God’s voice on earth. No one has that title. Every believer speaks to Christ and what He has done IN OUR lives. What believing in Him has done for us. My wonderful wife fled the cult of the Catholics. She has believed in Jesus Christ as Savior. She believed the Gospel of Grace through Faith in Jesus Christ as told by Paul in 1st Corinthians 15: verses 1-4. As Ephesians 2: verses 8 & 9 clearly tells us it is by Faith that we are saved, and not of works, so no man can boast!! Christ saves us, not the pope. My wife is happy in the freedom of believing in Christ, not following the lies of a man who thinks he is second in line after Christ.

Mercy is not only a pastoral attitude, but it is the very substance of the Gospel of Jesus

I think this is error. Love and Justice are equally vital. As I wrote elsewhere, perhaps not surprisingly, Fulton Sheen called this a long time ago:

"The modern world, which denies personal guilt and admits only social crimes, which has no place for personal repentance but only public reforms, has divorced Christ from His Cross; the Bridegroom and Bride have been pulled apart. What God hath joined together, men have torn asunder. As a result, to the left is the Cross; to the right is the Christ”. […] Communism comes along and picks up the meaningless Cross; Western post-Christian civilization chooses the unscarred Christ.”

“Communism has chosen the Cross in the sense that it has brought back to an egotistic world a sense of discipline, self-abnegation, surrender, hard work, study, and dedication to supraindividual goals. But the Cross without Christ is sacrifice without love. Hence, Communism has produced a society that is authoritarian, cruel, oppressive of human freedom, filled with concentrantion camps, firing squads, and brain-washings”

“The Western post-Christian civilization has picked up the Christ without His Cross. But a Christ without a sacrifice that reconciles the world to God is a cheap, feminized, colorless, itinerant preacher who deserves to be popular for His great Sermon on the Mount, but also merits unpopularity for what He said about His Divinity on the one hand, and divorce, judgment, and hell on the other. This sentimental Christ is patched together with a thousand commonplaces. […] Without His Cross, He becomes nothing more than a sultry precursor of democracy or a humanitarian who taught brotherhood without tears”.

A similar situation overtook America from 1989-2016. We went down this long, crazy path...from American Exceptionalism and JPII helping to save the world from communism, to a kinder and gentler nation, to It Takes a Village, to compassionate conservatism, to hopey-changey tyranny.

The Church today sure feels a lot like America in the summer of 2015.

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:2-3

I didn’t know anyone still listened to this Apostate Pope.

Jesus promised the gates of hell would not prevail against the Church He built upon the rock.

Don’t know how or when, but things will be set right. You can be sure of that.

Is Francis and others leading us in the ways of the world?

Why is there a silence on the dubia, Arch Vigano’s testimony, the open letter to the Bishops (heresy), support of facts by others and the 40 Truths?

With the exception of a few, the Catholic Bishops have been silent or unwilling to demand a public acknowledgment of the problems within the Church.

There appears to be a significant problem in the leadership of the Catholic Church. There appears to a sexual sinfulness that is leading to power struggles and confusion in the Church. There appears to be a challenge to Christ teachings on various issues: life, abortion, sexual sins, hell, marriage, communion, adultery, that God wills and permits a diversity of religions, etc.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, the Blessed Mother and Archangel Michael, we as the Body of Christ need to defend the Catholic faith and follow the ways of Jesus Christ.

”.... which by its nature wants to tame the mystery.”

Jorge, and much of the Vatican mafia loves to drool on endlessly about this etherial “mystery.” Oooooooh the MYSTERY!!!

There is no “mystery.” Jesus put an end to all of that. His death and resurrection destroyed any mystery, and the message of Salvation is clear. Acknowledge you are a sinner, believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died for you. Accept the free gift of Salvation, by faith. Repent of you sins, and confess He is Lord and tell Him that you want Him in your life.

You do that, and you are saved from Hell itself. Do it not, and you reject Christ and you will go to Hell.

See my tagline. That says it all. No mystery. Just the Truth.

I thought it was “Collapsing into Heresy” which was to be avoided?

He should be more worried about the Vatican collapsing into the pits of hell for its heresy.

He probably still follows the Catholic line of thinking that the Jews were Christ killers.

Wonder if Roman Catholicism still supports this?

To my knowledge the Fourth Lateran Council (1215) has not been overturned.

Canon 67: Jews and excessive Usury: Wishing therefore to see that Christians are not savagely oppressed by Jews in this matter, we ordain by this synodal decree that if Jews in future, on any pretext, extort oppressive and excessive interest from Christians, then they are to be removed from contact with Christians until they have made adequate satisfaction for the immoderate burden. .

Canon 68: Jews appearing in public in order that the offence of such a damnable mixing may not spread further, under the excuse of a mistake of this kind, we decree that such persons of either sex, in every Christian province and at all times, are to be distinguished in public from other people by the character of their dress — seeing moreover that this was enjoined upon them by Moses himself, as we read. They shall not appear in public at all on the days of lamentation and on passion Sunday; because some of them on such days, as we have heard, do not blush to parade in very ornate dress and are not afraid to mock Christians who are presenting a memorial of the most sacred passion and are displaying signs of grief.

Canon 69 Jews not to hold public offices: we forbid Jews to be appointed to public offices, since under cover of them they are very hostile to Christians.

Canon 70 Jewish converts may not retain their old rite: Takes measures to prevent converted Jews from returning to their former belief.

I think it was Pope John Paul, I don’t know these people, the one from Poland. He, I think it was, something about forgiveness for all that stuff, yet all those rulings, whatever they call them, way back when, are still in effect, never been thrown out, so yes, in their “rule book” they still stand as far as I have read.
