Costa Rica Wants to Force Catholic Priests into Violating Seal of Confession

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, June 5, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) — President Carlos Alvarado of Costa Rica has called on the Central American nation to “discuss as a society” possible legislative action to force Catholic priests to tell authorities when they hear confessions of child abuse and pedophilia.

Proposed by Deputy Enrique Sanchez, a member of the president’s left-of-center Citizen Action Party, the bill would amend Article 206 of Costa Rica’s criminal code and require clergy and others who have contact with young people to report allegations of sexual abuse of minors. Priests who fail to report what they heard in confession about child sex abuse would be subject to fines, the bill stipulates.

According to local media, President Alvarado said, “As a nation, we have seen the issue of violence, which is sexual in this case against children, is a problem that concerns us on the basis of evidence, and is something important to learn.”

The bill is being considered by Costa Rica’s national congress. In May, Alvarado signed a bill that extended the statute of limitations from 10 to 25 years for crimes against minors.

Currently, Costa Rican law notes that only teachers and health care professional are mandated reporters of child sex abuse.

Costa Rica wants to force Catholic priests to protect children and not pedo priests?

So are they going to have undercover cops confess to pedophilia and arrest the priest when he doesn’t go to the authorities?

That’s the only way this is enforceable.

Why don’t we just place microphones in all confessionals that are hotwired to the local police?

After all, government is much holier than the church.

Costa Rica wants you to be the Stasi and fake a confession, record it and then they will split the money with you.

Real confessions do not involve name, rank and serial number, they are anonymous.

Awwwww, too bad. Christ taught us to pray to the Father. He never mentioned intersession.

I would never advocate that under any circumstances

But this has to stop. We all agree on that.

But how do we go about it.

How do we protect priests who have seriously believe that pedophilia is taking place so that they cant be punished by superiors?

And it is a false choice that you finally present.

Who will we turn to to arrest and convict pedo priests? The church?

It is an axiomatic truth that when leftist NPC’s say believe all accusations they are completely wrong.

And it is also wrong to think that all confessions will automatically be bogus.

I will not accept their position nor the one you posit.

If someone is raped or molested and want to reveal their name that is their right and the other side has the right to defend the priest.

The priest cannot defend himself because he can never even acknowledge that he heard any person's confession. The State will get people to lie in order to persecute the Church, it is just that easy.

It is literally true that pedophilia is a hundred times worse in government schools.

https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/forgotten-study-abuse-in-school-100-times-worse-than-by-priests

Why doesn’t your self-righteous hysteria extend to government school teachers who are a hundred times more likely to molest? You should be a hundred times more upset at them.

Plus, the Catholic Church does not have a pedophilia problem.

The Catholic Church has a homosexual predator problem.

Yes, people have lied throughout history and I agree to the point that there will be people who lie about priests and that would sadden and enrage me.

I imagine there have been people who have went straight to cops and lied and said they were raped and weren’t.

There has undoubtedly been people who have went to all kinds of people in authority and lied.

But, with all that in mind, people also do tell the truth.

When it comes to certain crimes and offenses the system will have to be changed so that priests aren’t treated any differently than anyone else.

Treat them no differently from beginning to end in an investigation that a teacher or cop or mayor or parent or anyone else would have to go through if accused of molesting/rape.

Changing the rule for pedophilia/rape is not going to destroy the church.

And the church needs to get rid of all pedo priests and homosexual priests. This playing with fire on the church’s part is of their own making.

I have yet to see any explanation of how this is supposed to work in practice, or if it has been used somewhere yet. You would think someone would just spell it out one of these articles.

Yes, pedophilia is bad in the public school system and also bad in the SBC too.

It is also a protestant problem.

You have not seen my previous post and I had not seen this post of your yet and you see I agree with you.

And I said in that post that the church has a homosexual priest and pedo priest problem.

get rid of all homo priests and you take care of the homosexual predators by default.

Do we all really think the perverts are gonna bother with confession. If they feared satan they wouldn’t be labeled perverts. This is much ado about nothing.

If a person reveals their name the church should the say they will change the rule because they have no other recourse for priests to protect themselves and that they aren’t starting this but do have a right to defend themselves and thus God will understand.

How then do we fix the problem?

Yes, I will say that the public school system is bad, too.

And one branch of Protestantism, the SBC, has a problem too.

But how do we fix the problem within the Catholic church given the privacy restraints they have?

Yeah, seems like there would be no way to defend from this. They can’t even confirm or deny they heard a particular confession, much less what was in it to my understanding.

If there is a bad guy that considers confession, with this, he won’t even go.

If you are enabling criminal behavior you are enabling criminal behavior. Centuries of the powers that be treating the criminal organization in Rome with kid gloves has led to nothing but enablement of abuse and corruption. John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and every founding father with a brain was right about the collar and cassock crowd.
