Televangelist Todd Coontz has a well-worn routine: he dresses in a suit, pulls out a Bible and urges viewers to pledge a very specific amount of money. "Don't delay, don't delay," he urges, calmly but emphatically.
It sounds simple, absurdly so, but Coontz knows his audience extremely well. He broadcasts on Christian cable channels, often late into the night, drawing in viewers who lack financial literacy and are desperate for change.
"I understand the laws that govern insurance, stocks and bonds and all that is involved with Wall Street," he once said, looking directly into the camera. "God has called me… as a financial deliverer."
Crucially, he always refers to the money as a "seed" - a $273 seed, a $333 seed, a "turnaround" seed, depending on the broadcast. If viewers "plant" one, the amount will come back to them, multiplied, he says. It is an investment in their faith and their future.
In 2011, one of those desperate viewers was Larry Fardette, then based in California. Larry watched a lot of similar televangelists, known as prosperity preachers, who explicitly link wealth and religion. But he found Coontz particularly compelling. He assured quick returns. Too many “churches” exist to line the pockets of their founders and families. A nice line of business, with religious protection from taxes and oversight.

I assume these people know what they are donating to.....could be worse...could be a democrat they were wasting their money on!!!
I get very disheartened by some of the garbage I hear on alleged Christian television and radio stations.
I was just visiting So Cal, Sacramento and Phoenix looking at assisted living for my Mother. I’m in Montana and my siblings in So Cal were looking out for my Mother as they are closer. My Mom was living with my sisters’ kid as a cost saving move.
After five years of this my Mother burned through almost all of her savings as well as all the money every month she could have been saving.
My sister and her husband started a church and passed it on to their son. My sisters’ other kid and her husband also started and run a church.
When I asked where all the money went all I got was ... crickets. It was quite the party down there when there was money. But now the old lady was getting cranky, the money was gone and it was time for her to go.
I’m still seething over these so called Christians bilking my Mother of her savings.
These crooks, who prey on the gullible to feather their own nests, will answer to God on Judgement Day. Justice will be meted out.
Nothing but a fraud operating under the cover of a religion and thus escaping government scrutiny. Anybody can start a “religion” and get away with anything they damn well want to do because they call it a religion.
