First New Mosque in Athens Since Ottoman Empire to Open in April

There has been no official mosque in Athens since Greece was liberated from the Ottoman Empire in 1821, though historical mosques survive as museums. However, nearly two decades of debate and planning are set to culminate in the opening of a new mosque in April, reports TASS.

The mosque is being built on the territory of the former central parking lot of the Greek navy in the Athenian district of Votanikos. The imam will be elected by the administrative council and appointed by the Ministry of Education. Sermons will be mainly in Greek, though perhaps sometimes in English, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs explained, though the prayers will be read in Arabic.

The mosque will open at times of prayer and remain open all day on major Islamic holidays.

However, not all Muslims are happy about the new mosque. There is no minaret or loudspeaker to call Muslims to prayer, and the building looks like a large pavilion, says Naim El Gadur, the Chairman of the Muslim Union of Greece. The building can hold about 300 men and 50 women.

The opening of the mosque has been a long time coming. The Greek government announced in 2002 that there would be a mosque by the time of the 2004 Olympics, that the plan never came to fruition. The decision to build a mosque in Greece was made again in 2013 and a plot of land was allocated on the territory of the now unused naval base. However, Greeks have continually protested the project since then and there will be no minarets, as a concession to the Greek public.

Where's Medusa when you need her?

BTW, the original Clash of the Titans will always reign supreme over the remake. I don't care if it was stop-motion animation. I was skeered!

> WTF is going on? <

I’m no expert. But as I see it, this is happening for two reasons.

1. Right after 9/11, George W. Bush told us “Islam is peace”. The tone was set. And so it was very easy for soft-headed liberals everywhere (US and abroad) to push the “poor, innocent Muslim” story.

2. Maybe a decade ago I was reading an article by an American who was living in Europe. He said that right after 9/11 Europeans would come up to him and say “We are all Americans now.” The was great support for the US, and outrage at the Muslim attacks.

Then Bush invaded Iraq, and the mood quickly changed. Most Europeans (according to this author) saw the Iraq war as an illegal war of aggression. Not a whole lot different from Hitler’s invasion of Poland. So now the Europeans saw the Muslims as victims in need of help, and not terrorists.

Do you see what’s common to points 1 and 2?
The stupidity of George W. Bush.

That’s like injecting one tiny dose of Bubonic Plague bacteria directly into your bloodstream, just for the wonderfull goodwill effect it’ll have on the relationship between deadly bacteria and mankind.

President Trump IS a breath of Fresh Common Sense Air - but I’m pretty sure he’s not going to be able to stop this infiltration.

So glad I’ll be dead before I have to wear a hijab every day, though it WOULD keep the sun off while I’m FARMING - growing FOOD for the rest of you Infidels, LOL!

I hope the Greeks treat the mosque in the same manner the Turks treat the churches. All requests to perform maintenance, from replacing broken windows to repairing leaky roofs, must go through official government channels. It can take years to receive permission to fix anything in Turkey. The Greeks should also have agents visibly videotaping everybody entering/exiting the mosque - just as Turkey does.

One should never half measure against an enemy that vows to destroy you. The response to 9/11 was a big fail. Islam is winning the long war. They even give us the rope that we hang ourselves with. Quite depressing.

And aren’t mosques built on conquered territory? Why ever would the Greek Govt authorize the building on a former site of the Greek Navy??
