North Dakota legislators have proposed a bill allowing public high schools to offer an elective Bible studies class as part of its social studies curriculum.
"The intention of this bill is to provide an option to schools to teach a class on the bible from a historical perspective," State Rep. Aaron McWilliams, R-Hillsboro, a co-sponsor of the bill, told Fox News. "My position is that no religious text should be excluded from being taught as it relates to the historical or philosophical influences in our history or on our society today."
But the Republican lawmakers have come under heavy criticism for the proposal. The American Civil Liberties Union even stepped in and called it "unconstitutional."
The bill, which was recently amended, said that out of the 22 units required to graduate high school in North Dakota, of the three units for social studies, "any one-half unit may be replaced by Bible studies."
But the ACLU claims the course needs to bring other viewpoints into the mix to be constitutional.

Put God back in the schools!
The godless libs are scared spitless of the Truth.
Fascinating. Church and state are separate so they have a point. They can’t even respect the slightest thing such as grace in the cafeteria. It was ok in the military chow halls.
Letting the public school pinkos give their warped “historical” perspective on scripture is a bad idea
There is no such thing as separating the church and the state... It is a myth.
Amendment I. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
The free exercise of religion is the part that is always left out! Do we have separation of mosque and state now? We have created a hostility to the Christian religion.
Since W Bush the idiot let 800k moslems in the country after 9/11, and Obama let in about the same, I have seen over a decade of schoolkids getting education about islam in the schools.
Always in the guise of “social studies”.
“Church and state are separate so they have a point. They cant even respect the slightest thing such as grace in the cafeteria. “
Somehow the founders and every American leader missed this for the next 220 years and had it all wrong. And now in the last two decades we finally “get it”. As for grace that is absolutely legal, not even a question. Of course the teacher can’t lead it. But if a couple of kids say grace that is 100% legal.
It’s history. What’s wrong with studying history? There are plenty of comparative religion classes in colleges that study the bible, from a “believing this is nonsense” point of view. i.e. It’s not studying it that should get you in trouble in a secular school. Rather, it’s studying it with an eye to proselytizing that can get you into trouble.
The real problem is there is no one in the Education establishment qualified to teach the class; and dozens of ordained people willing to teach the class for free.
If they allowed college educated Sunday school teachers there would be hundreds of qualified free teachers.
I wonder what other classes could be taught by these college educated, experienced army of volunteers?
There is more than Religion at the root of the argument.
