Cardinal Blase Cupich has instructed Chicago-area priests to deliver a statement at Mass this weekend slamming a local TV news report that he calls misleading, saying it was edited to suggest he and Pope Francis were downplaying the ongoing clergy sex abuse scandal.
The clip came toward the end of a two-minute segment that aired Aug. 27 on NBC5 about the Archdiocese of Chicago cooperating with Illinois Attorney Gen. Lisa Madigans review of abuse allegations across the state. Since the interview aired, Cupich has been castigated across the internet for being seemingly insensitive to the sex abuse crisis.
Our story on the interview with Cardinal Cupich was accurate, NBC5 station manager Frank Whittaker said in an email. The story is posted on our website along with the full unedited interview for anyone to see.
In the TV report Cupich disputes, reporter Mary Ann Ahern paraphrases Cupichs claim of a small group of church insurgents upset with the popes direction, followed by the cardinal on screen saying: Hes got to get on with other things, of talking about the environment and protecting migrants and carrying on the work of the church. Were not going to go down a rabbit hole on this.

In lieu of the homily, the parish priest should play a video of the entire interview of the Cardinal and let the congregation make up their own minds.
St. Robert Bellarmine, you are wanted on the courtesy phone.
Perfect idea.
Yes. This is his 4th intervention to “correct” the original! That’s some ego.
Cupich is a crazy old queer. His priests will ignore him. He cant order them not to tell the truth. The statement by Cupich speaks for itself. He said the environment and immigration are more important that priest sexually molesting others, mostly young males.
What a pig!
After listening to the original soundbite clip, I wondered just how the Cardinal Cupich could be so clueless. However, having just listened to the full four-minute clip, I think that the soundbite clip makes the cardinal’s response seem worse than it really was in full context. In full context, the cardinal comes across as a run-of-the-mill progressive social justice Catholic who does not believe the Vigano allegations, not a lavender bishop predisposed to cover up unspeakably horrific sexual misconduct.
During the full four-minute clip, he does call for an independent investigation. https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/cardinal-cupich-interview-questions-cardinal-mccarrick-allegations-491926591.html It’s worth listening to all of the raw interview clips at this site.
I’m not RC and I don’t keep up with church politics. So, I have never heard of Cupich before. This assessment is based only on the tv interview and the recognition that it is not entirely unreasonable at this point to be skeptical of Vigano’s allegations.
Cupich is as tone deaf as the planners of Aretha Franklin’s funeral.
Fr. Phleger will enjoy spinning it into a tirade.
BTTT!
Remember that it has been prophesied by Cardinal George that Cupich would die in jail.
