Flashback: Pastor Ted Haggard and his Wife talk about the Gay Sex Scandal
Oprah Show ^ | 2009

Posted on 08/19/2018 5:28:46 PM PDT by CondoleezzaProtege

Ted Haggard was once one of the most power evangelical leaders in America.

New Life Church leader Ted Haggard was once one of America's most charismatic and powerful evangelical leaders, with an audience of more than 30 million people. Ted began counseling foreign dignitaries and consulting on a weekly basis with President George W. Bush. By 2005, Time magazine named him one of the most influential evangelicals in America.

But no one—not even his devoted wife, five children and his Colorado Springs, Colorado-based congregation—suspected that Ted was paying an admitted male escort for crystal meth. In November 2006, Mike Jones publicly alleged he'd engaged in a three-year sexual relationship with the pastor, which Ted immediately denied. Three days after the scandal broke and after a voice mail featuring Ted asking Mike for drugs was released, Ted's story unraveled. Eventually, Ted admitted to sexual immorality and to buying drugs. He later resigned from the church he helped to found.

In his first television interview since the scandal, Ted talks with Oprah about why he kept secret a part of his life he calls dark and repulsive...

Ted says he and Gayle, as church leaders, made their private lives more public than many others in their position. "We were very open, very transparent, about everything—except this one area of my heart," he says.

Why did he keep such an important part of his life hidden from his church? "I thought it would go away," Ted says. "Unfortunately, that's the state in a lot of leadership roles. And when you're in a leadership role, whether it's political or a religious leadership role, that exists. And I'm not saying that as an excuse."

“”We were very open, very transparent, about everything—except this one area of my heart,””

Actually, paying male hookers, buying crystal meth from gay hookers, having sex with male hookers, and shooting crystal meth in your veins with male hookers is more than one area.

Yeah, that’s so many things Moses would have needed another tablet just to write ‘em all down.

We know it is human to sin, and hopefully these people will get their lives straightened out. But WHY do they feel the need to tell us about it?

I know, money. Same as “why she stayed”.

Maybe Ted failed to read the Old Testament: “...be sure your sin will find you out.”

Sure seems to be a lot of stories lately, all of a sudden, about sex perverts in Protestant bodies. Wonder why?

“In the months leading up to the scandal, Ted says he would walk around his church in the middle of the night, praying to God.”

And he was up for three days, wide awake and thinking that midget KGB Agents planted a mind control chip in his head.

Evangelical, right?

About the dangers of throwing stones in glass houses.

I would say no church is perfect. This guy obviously was involved in some real bad stuff.

I would also guess that the cult of catholicism needs some misdirection. That unbiblical farce of a man controlling religion is being exposed very hard lately.

That’s not true!

Not no one.

His male hooker believed Ted was shooting meth and having gay sex.

Ted was not throwing stones, he was shooting crystal.

If you think finding a sex scandal in an evangelical church not even involving minors with no cover up excuses the systematic evil in the RCC that goes all the way to the top in Rome knock yourself out. No one said all protestant churches are perfect but that in no way excuses or lessens what is going on in your church. I don’t understand how so many of you can defend such evil but that’s on you. In our denomination any such scandal would result in the immediate defrocking of the pastor and wholesale change at the top of the congregation. Not reassigning the guilty party to an unsuspecting congregation

It’s interesting the behavior of certain RCC here. They cannot contain their glee at finding sin in another but refuse to see it or denounce it in their own fold. I take no joy in what is happening to your denomination but mourn for how it brings dishonor to the name of Christ. I sincerely hope your hierarchy repents and cleans house. The same as any congregation or system should deal with sin.

I don’t want to be judgmental but I watched the video at the bottom of the website for their new church. I felt that too much of it seemed to be about them. It was about Ted and family being victims. It showed the family setting around the table talking about them being crucified. I am not sure they really understand what crucified means. Again, too much I & me & us ....

They do a few good deeds and video them and put them on the internet? Ted referring to the opening of the new church as resurrection day for him?

I watched the 40+ minute video and I don’t believe there was mention of Jesus.

I certainly haven’t attended any of their services but I hope there is more focus on Jesus and the gospels.
