VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis, starting Holy Week services leading to Easter, urged young people on Sunday to keep shouting and not allow the older generations to silence their voices or anesthetize their idealism.
Francis spoke a day after hundreds of thousands of young Americans and their supporters answered a call to action from survivors of last month’s Florida high school massacre and rallied across the United States to demand tighter gun laws.
He did not mention the demonstrations. Catholic News Service (CNS) said Gabriella Zuniga, 16, and her sister Valentina, 15, both students from Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, where 17 people were killed in February, attended the service with their parents.
CNS posted a photo of the two holding up signs in St. Peter’s Square, with one reading, “Protect Our Children, Not Our Guns.”
The 81-year-old Francis led a long and solemn Palm Sunday service before tens of thousands in the square, many of them young people there for the Catholic Church’s World Day of Youth.
Francis led a procession in front of the largest church in Christendom to commemorate the day the Bible says Jesus rode into Jerusalem and was hailed as a savior, only to be crucified five days later.
“YOU HAVE IT IN YOU TO SHOUT”
Drawing on biblical parallels, Francis urged the young people in the crowd not to let themselves be manipulated.
“The temptation to silence young people has always existed,” Francis said in the homily of a Mass.
“There are many ways to silence young people and make them invisible. Many ways to anesthetize them, to make them keep quiet, ask nothing, question nothing. There are many ways to sedate them, to keep them from getting involved, to make their dreams flat and dreary, petty and plaintive,” he said.

I stopped going to mass in the 1980’s when I lived in the People’s Republic of California.
Fake “cardinal” Roger Mahoney and the rest of the left-wingers in the so-called catholic church were the reason.
Mahoney....who urged people to vote for democrats and supported every left-wing “cause” imaginable.

There are poster who hate the Catholic Church and hate any pope, but criticisms of Francis are warranted.

Our enemies are trying to break this country in half, if they haven’t done so already, and big mouth sides with our enemies. Glad I left the church when I did. I’d be leaving now if I hadn’t done so then.
I went to a Jesuit college in Los Angeles many years ago.
It’s not just ONE corrupt cardinal....all the “American” cardinals, and many if not most of the foreign ones are likewise.
A great many of the priests, nuns, and bishops are of the same mind.
The left has corrupted most institutions, and the Catholic Church, sadly, is one of them.
And the Church’s mis-handling of the priest abuse scandal was unforgivable.
I heard Sean Hannity say that he became what he calls a “non-denominational Christian” as a result of the priest sex abuse scandal. That’s pretty much where I am, and it’s because of the left-wing takeover of the church and their support for open borders / amnesty, income redistribution, gun control / confiscation, etc. etc. Many of the Jesuits these days are also supporting “same sex” marriage and abortion.
It’s all a bridge too far for me.
I will not deny that far too many in the Church have been corrupted, but they are unable to corrupt the True Faith. I will pray for you to be inspired by the Holy Spirit to find a faithful parish led by an untainted priest.

I have no problem with Jesus at all, it’s those who claim to be His earthly representatives that tick me off big time.

He’s the Deep State. And he’s saying all that while trying to broker a deal with the Chinese communists who slaughtered protesting young people.
And if anyone is being silenced in our era, it’s elders. Everything is about listening to young people and empowering them, and glorifying “youth culture,” the culture of the Prodigal Son when he asked for his inheritance and then took off.
If Francis believed in his Bible, he would believe more in the voice of elders.
