(CNSNews.com) - The majority of Americans in 2017 did not identify themselves as Protestants, according to Gallup surveys conducted during the year, and the differing religious denominations tended to be concentrated in certain geographical areas.
About half of Americans (48 percent) identify as Protestants or other Christians who are not Catholic or Mormon, said Gallup in its analysis of its polling.
The numbers from the Gallup survey align with numbers derived from a Pew Research Center survey published in 2015. That survey indicated that from 2007 to 2014, Protestants had dropped from 51.3 percent of the population to 46.5 percent. At the same time, according to that Pew survey, Catholics dropped from 23.9 percent of the population to 20.8 percent.
In Alabama, according to the newly released Gallup data for 2017, 77 percent said they were Protestant, making Alabama the most Protestant state in the country.
--In Rhode Island, 44 percent said they are Catholic, making Rhode Island the most Catholic state in the country.
--In Hawaii and Alaska, 33 percent said they had no religion, making them the most non-religious states.
--In New York, 8 percent said they were Jewish, making New York the most Jewish state.
--In Utah, 55 percent said they were Mormons, making Utah the most Mormon state.
Gallup derived these numbers from surveys it conducted throughout 2017 in which it interviewed 130,959 respondents in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The survey showed that certain religious denominations tend to be concentrated in certain geographical regions.
Americans continue to be geographically segregated by religion, said Gallup in its analysis. Protestants dominate in the South, while Catholics are most common in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic, with some representation in the Midwest.

Not the Roman Catholic church.
Please....just stop with this failed apologetic.
We can date Roman Catholicism to around the late 200s, early 300s.
New Testament Christianity began with Christ.
Right after you walk by the idol of Mary and bow down and pray to the image represented by the idol.
Boom!
I think we know the answer to that one!
Counting down before someone runs to the mods to complain about "Roman Catholic" bashing....such think skinned folks.
I was being funny. What does NT mean?
NT=New Testament
Thank you!
Wow....
Incoming......
I know.
Despite the fact that Catholic dominated countries are the most messed up ones going with incredible governmental corruption (Mexico, Colombia, Argentina etc) and spiritually, in places where syncretism runs rampant such as Haiti and The Dominican Republic.
Catholic dominated countries are economically the poorest ones going while getting back to Scripture increased the standard of living and work ethic of most of Europe.
The current decline in Europe is not proof that *Protestantism* doesn't work cause the *experiment* was a failure. It proves that it does work because the decline coincides with the abandonment of solid, Scriptural Christianity.
But the humor challenged will not understand....
Jesus saves people, not groups of people.
Salvation is an individual matter.
Nations prosper according to how much Biblical Christianity influences the people in it.
And just what has the Catholic church done for countries?
Show me ONE country that has prospered economically, politically, in freedom for the people, under heavy Catholic influence?
How about the Philippines? Venezuela? DR? Haiti?
Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island colony was a Reformed Baptist. Most of New England, did not become heavily Catholic until the years after the Irish famine.
Yeah, I know. If it would just get one catholic to study, even if they have to do it in secret, that's what I'm called to do. It's so blatant anyone should be able to see it. RCC's get so upset, just having a conversation is difficult. Revelation 18:4 should at least get them thinking, IMO. Who was the voice in Heaven speaking to except the woman from the great city over the kings of the earth? Rev 17:9 speaks of her that sits on 7 mountains. The Vatican sits there. Rev 17:6 John looks with amazement that a church killed more saints than all other religions put together. Just Google what was James doing after Jesus arose. James took over the governance of the church. Peter is not mentioned. Popes, cardinals, and nuns are not mentioned anywhere in Scripture. It's made up. We are all the church, we are all the Bride, we are all saints and priests. You don't need anyone to vote you in except Jesus.
Agreed.
Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams, a Puritan who was expelled from Massachusetts for not being Puritan enough.
Maryland was originally the Catholic colony.
I betcha it’s mainly atheists today. At least in the counties surrounding D.C.
What if you are just a Christian?
Matthew 23: 8-10 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers. And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ.
