Deep in the heart of Trump country, the Salvation Armys ubiquitous red kettle is turning into a cauldron of controversy for Sen. George Logan.
An Ansonia Republican, Logans volunteer work as a bell-ringer outside a Walmart in Naugatuck for the Salvation Army, which is a Christian charity, has drawn opposition from a secularist group.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation called on Logan to keep up the separation between church and state. The group wrote to him Tuesday to voice its objections to him ringing the bell outside the big box store twice this week, including an appearance scheduled for Saturday at noon.
The flap recalls past controversies involving the Salvation Armys red kettles, which were banned outside Target stores a decade ago. The retailers non-solicitation policy generated a significant backlash at the time, even though Target makes charitable contributions to the Salvation Army.
We urge you to consider supporting only secular charities in the future, the Madison, Wisc., group wrote Logan. This will ensure that representatives do not give the appearance of promoting an overtly Christian mission and will prevent citizens from feeling ostracized by their elected representatives because of their religious beliefs or sexual preference.
Logan will be pulling double duty for the Salvation Army Saturday, manning a kettle outside Walmart in Hamden in the morning.
I think its kind of sad to politicize charity work, Logan said. The Salvation Army is trying to raise money to provide food, clothing and, in some cases, shelter for people.
In 2016, the Naugatuck Valley, which Logan represents, overwhelming went for Donald Trump, whose Were Saying Merry Christmas Again refrain resonated with many voters in the blue-collar region.

Hey, per the Clinton administration, whatever he does outside his job is his business.
The left despises private charities. They think it’s exclusively a government function. Screw the poor and hungry; it’s about the power of government.
We need an island to put all our social malcontents and troublemakers.
Why should he be forced to support their religion of secularism? and what is this “separation between church and state”? The constitution mentions no such thing.
Reminds me of the saying, “Show me a hospital built by atheist.”
I dislike that group....more communistic than anything else
These guys can go to hell. He is free to practice his religion as he sees fit.
Or is it that only certain Christian denominations get are deemed "unacceptable"? Hmmmm …
Look up the membership of the Universal Church of Christ for clues as to who is behind this crap.
The Salvation Army sets up outside our local Jewel grocery store here in Chicagoland, and last year, continuing to this year, I have tried to give $1 every time I go there, and last year I gave a $20 kicker just before Christmas, so I guess I will do so again.
I hope this doesn’t sound selfcongratulatory, but I guess one might consider it that way. Last year, they would always say “Merry Christmas!” but last week I got a “Happy Holidays” . I was on the verge of saying, “Hey ...” but I held my tongue. Today I got a “Merry Christmas!” from a very attractive young lady.
Tell them to go to hell, early.
What does Soros’ Freedom From Religion Foundation have to say about muslims?
There is no group in America more bigoted and full of hate than atheists.
He’s not acting as a senator but as a private citizen.
The left is losing its war on Christmas. The guy behind the desk at the Dept of Motor Vehicles wished me a "Merry Christmas" today!
The First Amendment to the Bill of Rights says Congressmen shall be prohibited from the free exercise of religion. /s
Even if he was acting as a Senator he’d be in the right. The FFRF is just run by sick and evil people.
“Congress shall make no law....”
Australia wouldn’t take them. They want people that are a positive influence on their country.
