Martin Luther sparked the Protestant Reformation and was critical of what he considered excesses and corruptions in the Catholic Church. But did you know he continued to hold many Catholic doctrines about Mary?
Here are some quotes from Martin Luther about the Blessed Virgin Mary that may surprise you:
“She became the Mother of God, in which work so many and such great good things are bestowed on her as pass man’s understanding. For on this there follows all honor, all blessedness, and her unique place in the whole of mankind, among which she has no equal, namely, that she had a child by the Father in heaven, and such a Child….
“Hence men have crowded all her glory into a single word, calling her the Mother of God…. None can say of her nor announce to her greater things, even though he had as many tongues as the earth possesses flowers and blades of grass: the sky, stars; and the sea, grains of sand. It needs to be pondered in the heart what it means to be the Mother of God.” (source)
“God has formed the soul and body of the Virgin Mary full of the Holy Spirit, so that she is without all sins, for she has conceived and borne the Lord Jesus.” (source)

Luther was also wrong about reading the Christian church into the Old Testament.

Well, he retained the messed up understanding of the Godhead, along with reverence of superhuman Mary, so he probably continued to have a thing for graven images as well. Pot-kettle.
We love Luther. We hate Luther. We despise his teachings. We adore his teachings. It’s hard to keep this all straight.

To you Protestants, Luther, the foremost Reformer, must sound like a blasphemer. After all, GOD, who is pure spirit, has no mother, right?
How does one get there? Is it that Jesus was, we’re told, fully human and fully God? By being mother of Jesus, Mary had to have been mother of the God part, too. Is that the justification?
In the beginning (before mary) was the Word. The Word was with God and the Word was God. No mother there. Just the Eternal Living God.
The LORD used ML mightily to cause the great truth of salvation by grace through faith alone, as well as other great truths to be brought forth, as well as to come up against many false Catholic doctrines.
ML had been a Catholic priest and wasn’t astute enough to pull away from all of their false doctrines. The Lutheran Church to this day still has a Catholic flavor. I was brought up Lutheran, left Lutheranism becoming an atheist, then later, after I was born again, I knew not to go back to the Lutheran Church.
