This amazing monastery, which containing relics from empty tomb of Jesus Christ, was originally built by the Russian Church's most controversial leader, and now restored in all its glory
New Jerusalem Monastery, founded in 1656 by Patriarch Nikon, remains one of Russia's holiest places. This patriarch's reforms to church services sparked a major schism in the Russian Church, creating the sect of Old Believers.
While Patriarch Nikon may still be one of the most controversial figures of Russian Church history, one thing we can all agree upon is the beauty of his colossal monastery.
President Putin was very impressed by its renewed glory, just as we are often impressed by the president's interest in Russia's Christian world. Check out this great video of his tour of the monastery (full transcript below at the bottom of the article along with beautiful photos):
Its location, northwest of Moscow, was chosen for its strong resemblance to the Holy Land. The River Istra represents the Jordan, and the Monastery itself is a replica of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and sites throughout Jerusalem, albeit with significant artistic and architectural differences.
The Monastery was not only designed as part of the ideology that Moscow is the Third Rome, but to allow pilgrims the ability to experience what it's like in Jerusalem, without undergoing a long and potentially dangerous journey.
Complete with relics from the site of The Lord's passion, death, and reselection, this may be one of Russia's most unique monasteries.

in before etl stops by to disparage those who did this.
he’ll likely spam the thread and call a bunch of folks putinistas too.
oh, starting with me
When he visited W at his Texas house he said he was an atheist. Can someone tell me if he have a conversion?
Gorgeous! Bet their religious leader is not chastising nations for turning away immigrants and almost endorsing the gay lifestyle, he might even believe in the Bible.
I bet “W” told Putin that he was a conservative Republican.....
That story changed, too.
I believe Putin more than W.
Russia does have beautiful churches. I was there in the 70s when there was a push to clean and repair the onion domes. There was scaffolding everywhere.
You have a source for that? I’m not finding anything saying that he said that. I think you made that up.
I don’t know what to think of Putin.
One could put on the hat of a cynic and say that he realizes the power of the past and the potential power of a large central church and is attempting to leverage that to his advantage by aligning with them.
OTOH, compared to our homegrown leftists who reject anything that is historical, beautiful and/or religious (unless it’s Muslim), you can find much to admire in the man.
Apparently we do. Good question. From wiki:
In other words, Putin is an SOB, but he’s an SOB for Mother Russia.
I noticed that outspoken atheists in Russian can get arrested.
Well, for sure Putin was touring Eastern Orthodox Churches in September 2005, and working to restore the connection between the Russian Orthodox and Greek Orthodox that had been damaged by Stalin's Soviet Communism, as can be seen here: Putin Visits the Holy Mountain
Not typical atheist activity.
This may help...
From the Russian Orthodox Church's website...
12 February 2016
Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), has issued a statement on behalf of the Council hailing the historic meeting of Pope Francis, pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, and Patriarch Kirill, primate of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The two leaders met on 12 February in Havana, Cuba.
The Russian Orthodox Church is the largest member church in the WCC..."

Catch that? The Russian Orthodox Church is the largest member of the (hard left) World Council of Churches!
That is all you need to know to understand that it is a sham operation. Reverend Wrights fake church United Church of Christ (UCC) is also a member. In fact, his (communist) Black Liberation Theology was concocted by the KGB.
The Russians must laugh their butts off at how easily westerners can be tricked and deceived.
The Russian Orthodox Church is a member of the (communist) World Council of Churches:

From David Horowitz's FrontPageMag.com/DiscoverTheNetworks.org:
Profile: LIBERATION THEOLOGY
...liberation theologys real creator was the Soviet Unions foreign intelligence and domestic security agency, the KGB.
Patriarch Kirill, who today heads Russian Orthodox Church, secretly worked for the KGB under the code name Mikhailov and spent some 40 years promoting liberation theology.
Ion Mihai Pacepa, the highest-ranking Soviet-bloc official ever to defect to the West, writes: Liberation theology has been generally understood to be a marriage of Marxism and Christianity.
What has not been understood is that it was not the product of Christians who pursued Communism, but of Communists who pursued Christians....
Its genesis was part of a highly classified Party/State Disinformation Program, formally approved in 1960 by KGB chairman Aleksandr Shelepin and Politburo member Aleksei Kirichenko, then the second in the party hierarchy after Nikita Khrushchev.
Adds Pacepa: In 1971, the KGB sent Kirill who had just been elevated to the rank of archimandrite to Geneva as emissary of the Russian Orthodox Church to the World Council of Churches.... Kirill/Mikhailovs main task was to involve the WCC in spreading the new liberation theology throughout Latin America.
In 1975, the KGB was able to infiltrate Kirill into the Central Committee of the WCC a position he held until he was elected patriarch of Russia, in 2009.
Not long after he joined the Central Committee, Kirill reported to the KGB: Now the agenda of the WCC [World Council of Churches] is also our agenda.

In the days when the Superpowers were locked in a Cold War, Latin America seethed with revolution, and millions lived behind an iron curtain, a group of theologians concocted a novel idea within the history of Christianity. They proposed to combine the teachings of Jesus with the teachings of Marx as a way of justifying violent revolution to overthrow the economics of capitalism.
The Gospels were re-rendered not as doctrine impacting on the human soul but rather as windows into the historical dialectic of class struggle. These "liberation theologians" saw every biblical criticism of the rich as a mandate to expropriate the expropriating owners of capital, and every expression of compassion for the poor as a call for an uprising by the proletarian class of peasants and workers.

August, 2006
Its an odd project considering that freedom of religion exists almost exclusively on paper in the closed communist country.
North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il is supposed to be a communist atheist.
So why has he made promoting the Russia Orthodox Church his latest pet project?
On August 13, the countrys first Orthodox church is to be opened in the capital city of Pyongyang.
Russian Metropolitan Bishop Kyrill, second in command within the Church after the Patriarch, will travel to Pyongyang to christen the new house of worship. ...
Sure as $hit.
I watched it on live TV. He and W were at a high school near Crawford, Texas taking questions from students. One girl asked about their religious beliefs. W professed his belief in Christ. Putin told the girl he was an atheist. I did NOT make it up. Why would I?
So they both covered. Putin to the good side. W to the dark side.
What's wrong, are you too stupid to understand what I posted?
All kinds of reasons, including just plain old being wrong. I can’t wait to see that bombshell video when you locate it. Not a word about that anywhere in the reporting about Putin’s visit to Crawford.
I call BS.

Here’s the transcript of the high school Q&A session, including all remarks. The question wasn’t asked, and the only reference to God was;
“And like President Bush did, I would also like to congratulate three Texans and two people from Waco, with the liberation by the U.S. official forces and their withdrawal from the land of Afghanistan. (Applause.)
Of course, it is very important to be born under a happy star and to have destiny facing your way. And, indeed, I’m in agreement with the President, perhaps God was looking quite positively on this.
But there are different approaches to addressing such kind of problem. There are people deeply religious who usually say that God knows what is to befall a nation, a people, or a person. But there are people no less devoted to God, but who still believe that the people, a person should also take care of their own destiny and lives. And it gives me great pleasure to deal and to work with President Bush, who is a person, a man who does what he says. (Applause.)
And I congratulate those who have been liberated by the Armed Forces, and their relatives. And also, I would like to congratulate on this, President Bush. (Applause.)”
