A Google search for family at Thanksgiving yields disturbing results.
An article authored by Dr. Marie Hartwell-Walker and posted on Psych Centrals web site offers 10 Tips for Surviving Thanksgiving with the Dysfunctional Family.
Another article, written by TODAY contributor Gail Saltz and posted on the morning shows site, is headlined Thanksgiving stress: How to avoid holiday family conflict.
And still another article, keyboarded by Esquire.com writer-at-large Dave Holmes and posted on the magazines site, begs the question: Is Thanksgiving Better With Family or Friends?
Hartwell-Walker advises lining up some co-conspirators before the family gathers for Thanksgiving. Chances are youre not the only one irked by your familys dysfunctional routines, she assures, adding that co-conspirators should (a)gree to tag-team each other with the folks you all find particularly difficult.
Saltz suggests preparing some cool one-liners in advance of Thanksgiving. You know your sister is coming, the TODAY contributor reminds, and shes going to say, Gee you look like you gained a little weight this year. To which Saltzs recommended response is: You know what? I dont really want to talk about that right now, but lets set the table.
Then theres Holmes, who laments that, With family as opposed to friends only God can control the guest list. That means, he continues, that (a)ll manner of socially-anxious uncles and humor-deficient cousins must be in the same place, simply by virtue of being related to one another. Its a recipe for disaster in even the best of years.
There are, regrettably, many who will sit down to Thanksgiving dinner this evening who share the sentiments of Hartwell-Walker, Saltz and Holmes. They think Thanksgiving a secular holiday when family must be tolerated (no matter how disagreeable). But, in fact, Thanksgiving is a day set aside to acknowledge the beneficence of the Almighty, who created family.
Indeed, upon creating Adam and Eve, the first husband and wife, the Bible tells us: God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful and multiply. If God thought the family superfluous, He could have simply populated the earth with fully-grown human beings with no need for procreation.
And that the family is sacrosanct in the eyes of God is borne out by the story of Cain and Abel, the first offspring of Adam and Eve. After Cain killed his younger brother hows that for a dysfunctional family? God asked Cain, Where is Abel, your brother. To which Cain responded, Am I my brothers keeper?
Gods answer was Yes. We are our brothers keeper, our sisters keep, our mothers keeper, our fathers keeper, our Familys keeper.
Thats why God commands Honor your father and mother.
Thats why the Bible declares that if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially those of his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
And thats why Jesus Christ said that if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Thats what Thanksgiving is about: Paying homage to our Creator. Honoring our parents. Showing loving-kindness to our relatives. And reconciling with family members with whom we have differences.
Some families just don’t deserve it. Toxic people exist, some of them breed. I go out of my way to make sure neither my mother (who thinks no holiday is complete without a screaming argument) nor mother-in-law (who thinks no sentence is complete without bickering and condescension) get a chance to mess up my holidays. Holidays should be spent with people you love, and if that includes your family awesome, but if it doesn’t that OK too.
No, Thanksgiving is not a “holy-day.”
Perhaps in the strictest sense you are correct, but it is a wonderful opportunity to give thanks to God our creator and the many blessings we have.
Sharing a meal with friends is a very Christian thing to do. Before my husband and I had children, we always had single friends join us for Thanksgiving.
Last night at church, our pastor said that anyone who would otherwise be alone could join him for dinner - “Please! People give me way too much food!” - “Or I’ll bet there will be plenty with the Tax-chick family!”
Correct. All Saints Day is a holy day; Christ Mass is a holy day; Easter is a holy day.
Dennis the Little calculated Christ’s birth (inaccurately due to having to rely on Roman Numerals) just to produce an Easter calendar, the most celebrated holy day in Christendom.
Thanksgiving is not a holy day. Is this another attempt to impose Christianity on pagan rituals? Is there to be no respite from Jesus?
What on earth do you mean? It has always been designated for giving thanks to Almighty God. If that’s not holy, I don’t know what is.

You can't run far enough or fast enough to get away from God. If you try, though, in the end He will give you exactly what you wanted.
Choose wisely.
