Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Ark of the Covenant, The Tabernacle, and The Temple
Leviticus 10
The Death of Nadab and Abihu
10 Aarons sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. 2 So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. 3 Moses then said to Aaron, This is what the Lord spoke of when he said:
Among those who approach me
I will be proved holy;
in the sight of all the people
I will be honored.
Aaron remained silent.
4 Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aarons uncle Uzziel, and said to them, Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp, away from the front of the sanctuary. 5 So they came and carried them, still in their tunics, outside the camp, as Moses ordered.
6 Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, Do not let your hair become unkempt[a] and do not tear your clothes, or you will die and the Lord will be angry with the whole community. But your relatives, all the Israelites, may mourn for those the Lord has destroyed by fire. 7 Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting or you will die, because the Lords anointing oil is on you. So they did as Moses said.
8 Then the Lord said to Aaron, 9 You and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, 10 so that you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean, 11 and so you can teach the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.
12 Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, Take the grain offering left over from the food offerings prepared without yeast and presented to the Lord and eat it beside the altar, for it is most holy. 13 Eat it in the sanctuary area, because it is your share and your sons share of the food offerings presented to the Lord; for so I have been commanded. 14 But you and your sons and your daughters may eat the breast that was waved and the thigh that was presented. Eat them in a ceremonially clean place; they have been given to you and your children as your share of the Israelites fellowship offerings. 15 The thigh that was presented and the breast that was waved must be brought with the fat portions of the food offerings, to be waved before the Lord as a wave offering. This will be the perpetual share for you and your children, as the Lord has commanded.
16 When Moses inquired about the goat of the sin offering[b] and found that it had been burned up, he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aarons remaining sons, and asked, 17 Why didnt you eat the sin offering in the sanctuary area? It is most holy; it was given to you to take away the guilt of the community by making atonement for them before the Lord. 18 Since its blood was not taken into the Holy Place, you should have eaten the goat in the sanctuary area, as I commanded.
19 Aaron replied to Moses, Today they sacrificed their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord, but such things as this have happened to me. Would the Lord have been pleased if I had eaten the sin offering today? 20 When Moses heard this, he was satisfied.

1. Leviticus 10:6 Or Do not uncover your heads
2. Leviticus 10:16 Or purification offering; also in verses 17 and 19

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

"I'm not Religious," said the young woman, "But I'm VERY Spiritual."
I can't help it...I cringe a little when I hear that. Sometimes I am tempted to ask, "And just WHAT "spirit" are you "spiritual" WITH?"
Nadab and Abihu were punished for bring "Strange Fire" to the Lord. What exactly is "Strange Fire"?
We have already seen the Instructions, Measurements, Blueprints, Recipes, and Rules for the offerings in the Temple. We have also seen The Pillar of Fire and the Pillar of Cloud Leading the Israelites. We have read of the Shekinah Glory of God Filling the Tabernacle. What we have NOT read, however, is instructions for KINDLING the Fire for the Burnt Sacrifices on the Altar. The Incense was to be ignited by the coals FROM the Altar, but there is no instruction for starting the Fire in the first place. Anyone who has run out of matches on a camping trip knows that this is not an easy thing to do.
Earlier and Later Scriptures both in the Torah and the Histories give us an answer. For Holy Purposes, God HIMSELF lights the fire. Genesis 15 tells us of God's Covenant with Abraham, where Abraham lays out the Sacrifice but has to wave away birds of prey until God consumes the animals with fire from heaven. Elijah's confrontation with the Priests of Baal (1 Kings 18) shows us that no amount of water, sand, or soil can quench this Living Fire From Heaven. It is a short step from these amazing miracles to the Fire of heaven coming out of the sky to consume the sacrifice on the Altar of the Tabernacle. Then, the Incense was to be ignited from the coals of THIS Fire, and none other.
From today's reading, it is probable that these two sons of Aaron (who were authorized) took some incense (which was authorized) but ignited it with some ordinary fire from the camp (Which was NOT!) and paid the penalty for Sacrilege. It was so egregious in God's Eyes that Aaron was instructed NOT to go through the usual mourning period, or appear disheveled, or to interrupt his duties at all.
Why was God so angry at Nadab and Abihu? Further reading in the Chapter indicates that alcohol was involved. Could it be that these two brothers were getting drunk, horsing around, and were mocking their priestly duties by lighting up some incense and approaching the Holy of Holies? (Hey bro...hold mah beer and watch this...YIKES!). That would certainly be deserving of grievous punishment.
But...is the young woman who says "I'm not Religious, But I'm VERY Spiritual." any different? From WHAT is she deriving her spirituality? If the spirit is not from God, where IS it from? This is what has come to be known as "Strange Fire".

Good points about being spiritual, left that others.
So many spiritual books out there, they talk about God, etc. - like Eat, Pray, Love. But the real divider is Jesus.

Further reading in the Chapter indicates that alcohol was involved. Heh, your 'way with words' shines through yet again. ;)
"Spiritual" can mean all sorts of weirdness, but I think a big part of the problem is that there really *is* much wrong with establishment religion and what is considered acceptable practice "in the name of the Lord" (e.g. religion forum flame wars), thus reasonable people back away and don't want to be viewed as "religious."
One day very very soon, the rightful order will be restored by the one who has been sent to 'fix stuff'. The one who is the embodiment of the Law of Justice and Love will be able to teach people, "I understand your heart, but look, how if you not do that... here's what to do instead, I know what you'd do well...", and people will say, "Wow, this guy's for real, not like the loud preachers with their hands out yet never have a kind, gentle word unless they smell money or fame. I'll do anything *this guy* wants, all day long."
Well, that's just not the kind of teaching coming from the usual religious beatdowns about how nobody can ever measure up. Yeah well God knows that already, and we all know that already, but to be cared for and given the perfect 'assignment' to lift our spirits and be somebody useful to God... what a gift of love and devotion.
May you soon be able to teach music to your heart's content, no barriers... how much deep joy would that bring? A lot. :)

People like Nadab and Abihu who decide to horse around, won’t last long under the ‘new sheriff in town’.
Imagine that you were given the long lost music to David’s psalms, and were tasked with teaching them to a LOT of children, how to play the chords and all that, and their music would be heard in the Temple... would you not wish there were 50 hours in the day?
Would you not want to get up early and stay late all day every day? Could you imagine such a perfect job? And it went to you, because you were just right for the job? Amazing, no? How gracious and loving of a gift would that be!!! You’d take it and run with it and be overjoyed, yes yes? :)
But to someone else, whose heart doesn’t get the concept and believes that God’s gift is a free ride, expecting to strum some old tunes with adult beverages flowing, not being a person geared toward an actual “work assignment”...
That job would be something to get as far away from as possible, egads. What a slave driver that guy is, sheesh!
Totally misses the point, that like Jacob ‘working’ for Rachel... it’s not any work at all if it is love. Seemed but a few days to him, for the love he had toward her.
The new sheriff has a pretty strong work ethic, ya think. Energizer Bunny. He would make most people flee, just on general principle. Meanwhile,
Psalm 133, Hine ma-tov...
A Song of Maalot of David; Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity:
2. It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that runs down upon the beard, Aaron’s beard, that runs down to the hem of his garments:
3. Like the dew of Hermon descending upon the mountains of Zion; for there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life for evermore:
