FULL TITLE: Principal withheld diploma from senior class president who refused to read school-written speech and instead read his own remarks at graduation
A North Carolina high school withheld a diploma from a graduating senior who refused to read a commencement speech prepared for him and instead read his own written remarks, it was reported on Thursday.
Marvin Wright was permitted to write a speech and read it at last Friday's graduation ceremony by virtue of his being the senior class president at Southwest Edgecombe County High School, according toWRAL-TV.
'I really worked hard on this speech,' he said.
But on the day of the ceremony, he says he was told by school administrators that he could not read his own speech.

"First and foremost, I want to thank God for making all of this possible."
Had he thanked Aller it would have been okay.
“First and foremost, I want to thank God for making all of this possible.”

Sue the school, the principal, the school board for 1st Amendment violations. Make some big $$$$$$ and they won’t do that again...............
Sue the principal personally, not the school system. Free scholarship from this nasty Rat who violates rights.
School officials admitted afterward that there was nothing objectionable about Wrights speech, except for the fact that it was too long and failed to meet an approval deadline.
Answer: Way, way, way, way, way too much.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Can't have any of this thinking for yourself nonsense going on you know.
I’m sick of this anti-Christian PC crap.
I enjoyed his speech. It was definitely the one he should have given. The perfunctory ‘speech’ written by the Administrators said nothing. And I am really tired of the ‘we did it!’ (From the movie Legally Blond) at the end of so many stupid graduation speeches. I am not surprised that the School administration/principal/dictators wanted a different speech. My son gave one of the student speeches at his high school graduation and the ‘powers that be’ edited his speech. It didn’t make any difference in the impact, so he acquiesced to the change. But why ask a student to give a speech of their own, if you want your (school admin) ‘speech’ given? Just give it yourself and only edit out profanity or inappropriateness in a student’s speech.
“Aller” seems a tad disrespectful.
“Holler” is the preferred term at present.
As “Holler Ackbar!!” just before your underwear bomb goes off.
lol
Fascists are in charge of the school system.
“School officials admitted afterward that there was nothing objectionable about Wrights speech, except for the fact that it was too long and failed to meet an approval deadline.”
BS! When I graduated someone invited then Sen. Rockefeller to speak and we could not get him to SHUT UP! He was like the Energizer Bunny just kept going and going and going.
Was not the deadline and we all know it.
His speech was wonderful - a very mature young man, with courage.
Heck, and with the quality of laser printers, just get some high quality paper, a copy of Printshop, and make your own if it means so much.
Diploma is just a piece of paper, the paperwork behind it has the meaning. Kid should move on with his life.
Sue them for everything they’ve got.
And, he received a good life lesson, namely, that the powers that be rarely have your best interests at heart.
At church last night minister spoke at length about the increasing anti-Christian attitudes and decline of morality in the U.S., that our time here on earth is fortunately very limited. Our rewards will come in Heaven. He also repeated the Bible verses “Be not deceived. God is not mocked. For whatsoever a man soweth he shall also reap” several times.
It was a little long but there was nothing wrong with it.
Shame on the principal and whomever for not letting this young man have his day. This does not do any good to discourage decent children from doing something that a young man should be able to do.
It is hard for me not to hate what a sorry damn place we have come to.
"If I wanted your opinion, I'd give it to you!"

Sue the snot out of the principal. They cannot deny the student the earned diploma. Schools are nearly identical to prisons. That is not hyperbole.
