FULL TITLE: The number of atheists in America could be 10 TIMES more than previous estimates: Shocking study shows a decline in people who believe in God
The number of atheists in this country could be as much as 10 times more than previous estimates, according a study published earlier this year.
The percentage of atheists in the US varies depending on who - and how - you ask. According to a Gallup poll in 2016, only one in 10 Americans answered 'no' to the question: 'Do you believe in God?'
Even fewer actively identify as atheist, with numbers clocking in at 3 percent, according to a Public Religion Research Institute poll in the summer of 2016.
With research showing there is a stigma surrounding atheists, the authors of a new study found a way for subjects to indirectly reveal their beliefs and found 26 percent of Americans do not believe in God.

I used to think there were two types of people: Sheep and goats.
However, I’ve recently revised that thinking. I now think there are two general types, sheep and goats, and the “sheep” group is really two types of people: Found sheep and lost sheep.
I want to share the gospel with lost sheep but don’t want to waste time on goats. However, I don’t know which ones are the goats. So my solution is to not “badger” those that are not “found” sheep. Once they know where I stand and feel comfortable talking with me, we need only wait for the Lord’s timing to show them to not be a goat. And then the joy begins.
BTW, I compare the intellectual mind to an AM radio and the “spiritual self” to an FM radio.
You can have the world’s most powerful AM radio and have no FM radio at all. And sometimes having a very powerful AM radio causes one to depend on it too much.
Having a stellar intellect only makes you one of the smarter ants in the ant hill. You’r still just an ant.
I went to an Episcopal funeral not long ago of a doctor, which was attended by many of his medical colleagues, many of whom were Jewish or Indian. The eulogist told a droll story of this man's tenure on the vestry. At a vestry meeting, one of the officers had suggested the vestry members pray about an upcoming decision, to which the eulogist quoted the deceased as saying, "Oh, why bring God into this?" at which the congregation tittered and snickered. I was appalled at such a lack of witness in front of guests of other faiths.
Hardly shocking considering the evil that Americans participate in.
If we were honest about what percentage of Christians reside in America, 10% may be pushing it.
I agree. Probably much less than 10%. “Narrow is the gate....”
I don’t believe it.
I’ve long thought the polls conducted by the large religious bodies show unrealistic numbers. Just my intuition from having attended secular schools through college and having known my own particular slice of the student body.
