ABSTRACT: Jesus of Nazareth underwent Jewish and Roman trials, was flogged, and was sentenced to death by crucifixion. The scourging produced deep stripelike lacerations and appreciable blood loss, and it probably set the stage for hypovolemic shock as evidenced by the fact that Jesus was too weakened to carry the crossbar (patibulum) to Golgotha. At the site of crucifixion his wrists were nailed to the patibulum, and after the patibulum was lifted onto the upright post, (stipes) his feet were nailed to the stipes. The major pathophysiologic effect of crucifixion was an interference with normal respirations. Accordingly, death resulted primarily from hypovolemic shock and exhaustion asphyxia. Jesus death was ensured by the thrust of a soldiers spear into his side. Modern medical interpretation of the historical evidence indicates that Jesus was dead when taken down from the cross. A Doctor At Calvary: The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ as Described by a Surgeon Pierre Barbet, M.D. This is probably the single best book. I have given it to several priests over the years as a gift for Lent.
The Crucifixion ol Jesus, Completely Revised and Expanded, A Forensic Inquiry by Frederick T. Zugibe. If you get the two-disc, Definitive Edition of the Passion of The Christ he is one of the people interviewed in the section on crucifixition.
DVD How Jesus Died: The Final 18 Hours Trinity Pictures Ltd. This includes sections with interviews with Frederick Zugibe and with Dr. John Bonica, one of the founding fathers of the modern study and understanding of pain and its treatment.
DVD Crucifixtion The History Channel.
I cannot say I love that movie or enjoyed it. But I has seen it twice and it does not fail to bring me to tears. Full on, blubbering, wailing tears.
That said, I felt that the scourging scenes were overdone. I only base this opinion on what I see on The Shroud.
Easter eve is the day the MSM finds religion, showing their expert knowledge about Christ ...
... after cruxifying him every other day of the year with their ignorance.
When Mel Gibson was told that he responded by saying that it was actually much, much worse than what he showed.
I just want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Easter. In two days, Christ will rise and conquer death. Off to Good Friday service.
But, perhaps...just perhaps, therein lies the distinction. For in no sense was Jesus, just any man.
His arms were stretched at least six inches longer than his normal span, which means all of his bones from wrist to wrist were pulled out of their sockets.
When he tried to take a breath he would have to stand up as straight as he could on the one nail that held both ankles.
The reason why he died so relatively quickly was because it was a tremendous effort to raise himself up in order to take one breath - this caused tremendous strain on his heart.
Experts have surmised that Jesus died of cardiac arrest - a broken heart.
While he was going through his passion and death, he uttered the psalms he was at each point fulfilling.
John 15
9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
It's one of those things about life having purpose and meaning, animation of soul and spirit - that to love and be loved is life back from the dead.
I am awed. More evidence of what a superior being He was and what a superior mind He possessed.
I am not worthy to wash His feet. But I still would. What a sad day.
Had read today a wonderful book by Fulton J. Sheen on the seven last words Christ. A short book with meditations on the final words of Jesus. Very powerful and brought to tears at the end.
Correction: of Christ.
How powerful. Saturated with Divinity and humanity.
