The restored tomb in which Jesuss body is believed to have been interred after his crucifixion will be officially unveiled at a ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalems Old City on Wednesday.
If the intervention hadnt happened now, there is a very great risk that there could have been a collapse, Bonnie Burnham of the World Monuments Fund, which had oversight of the project, told Associated Press. This is a complete transformation of the monument.
The delicate restoration was carried out by a team of about 50 experts from the National Technical University, which previously worked on the Acropolis in Athens and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The conservators worked mainly at night in order to allow pilgrims continued access to the shrine.
In October, a slab covering the rock-carved tomb was lifted for the first time in more than two centuries, allowing restoration workers to examine the original rock shelf or burial bed on which Jesuss body is thought to have rested. A small window has been cut into marble slabs to allow pilgrims a glimpse of the rock. The team also repaired and stabilised the shrine with titanium bolts and mortar, and cleaned thick layers of candle soot and pigeon droppings. The work involved the use of radar, laser scanners and drones.
Wednesdays ceremony to mark the completion of the restoration will be in the presence of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, the spiritual leader of the worlds Orthodox Christians, and a representative of Pope Francis.

He ain’t there.
And he probably WASN’T there either.
I agree.
What reason do you have to suggest he wasn’t? From an archeological point of view, it is possible. Much like when Heinrich Schliemman (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heinrich_Schliemann)found Troy and other ancient sites. In many cases, a thing or a place are just as they claim, though not always true (alleged ossuary of a brother of Jesus).
It took them 50 experts and $4 million to renovate a cave? Good God!
It would be the modern tradition to find Christ’s body in a new tomb every Easter.
Can you imagine what they could make by allowing people to spend the night in there? Better than a Holiday Inn Express!
If I visit 9 times is my 10th visit free?
Is this the Tomb owned by Joseph of Arimathea?
Sounds like a Florida tourista trap.
So it is said. This structure is built above and around the simple stone tomb owned by Joseph of Arimathea.
Now it’s a Luxury Suite
Thanks, Salvation!
Thanks for posting this!
Well at least the tradition [of whatever location] would mean that, because the NT says it was Joseph's own new tomb.
Isn't it peculiar that the father Joseph (known as a just man, a tzaddik, like the patriarch Joseph) dropped out of the narrative and is presumed dead, then later on this wealthy Joseph of Aramathea appears out of nowhere, also described as "just" - a tzaddik - and has the ability/connection to claim the body?
Sure seems like there's an allegory/parable in all that. At the Exodus (Passover, crucifixion), the bones of Joseph were taken up.
