Guidonia (Italy) (AFP) - Pope Francis admitted on Sunday to sometimes having "darkness" cloud his own faith, while warning against "Christian parrots" who pay lip service to the church without acting on its values.
"At certain times, I have also encountered moments of darkness in my faith and that faith decreased a lot, but with a little bit of time we rediscover it," the Pointiff told parishioners after saying mass in a village near Rome.
"Some days we can't see faith, everything is in darkness.
"Yesterday, for example, I christened 13 children in areas devastated by earthquakes and there was a father who had lost his wife, and we ask ourselves if this man can have faith.
"We understand that there is darkness, we must respect this darkness of the soul. We don't study to get faith, we receive it like a gift."

His Pagan faith?
This guy is not quite right in the head. I understand what he’s trying to say, but, in English, at least, this is not good.
Yep, Been saying that in my own words for a Long time now, “If one Truly Believes, one cannot help to Act.” Thus one is not necessary saved by works, however Faith alone without works cannot be!
God Bless
Wrong Pope for the times. The “darkness” is such that Christianity is in peril due to the devil of Islam and the anti-Christians. The importation of colonists under the shield of Catholic charities is despicable....I saw him in Philadelphia and it was an amazing experience. He is, unfortunately, all sizzle and no steak.
Mother Teresa claimed to have suffered a darkness in her faith for extremely long periods of time.
And that is precisely what he is forcing on to the Church with his demand for "pastoralism" and ignoring Doctrine. To wit, the Magisterium and the Gospels are the proper sources of belief but in the "real world" must be set aside for situational treatments of problems.
We do not disagree, Pray for Pope(Questionable...) Francis, for those given a lot, a Lot is expected and he is in a very dangers place now with many of his actions and words over these recent years and leading many Souls astray... So Pray for his Soul and his Humbling to God and the Church Teachings...
God Bless
It's been close to four years as pope and he still hasn't seem to have rediscovered that Faith.
In the last days there will be . . . . . . .
Christian parrots. Yet another insult. Most negative pope in my lifetime.
As a point of fact, BTW, men who attend Mass are far more likely to interact with their family and help the unfortunate than men who worship sports on Sunday.
Why does he always attack the good guys?
Then we will pray for your conversion to the Light of Jesus Christ.
How sad.
You can go to mass AND watch football, ya know :)
Not Catholic but I thought the Pope was considered infallible, the representation of Christ on earth? If that’s true he should never have periods of doubt or be in the darkness about his faith, right?
Look in the mirror, Frank.
To be infallible, it has to be a doctrine or decree that has to be believed by all Catholics and declared as such. It doesn’t in any way imply that they are free of the mistakes every human makes, in general, or morally.
I think there have only been two doctrines infallibly defined since 1800 or so.
As far as general statements to the press, political opinions, interpretations of religion expressed over lunch and a glass of wine, they have the same infallibility as mine do. Well, his may have a little more respect, due to his position, but they are no more infallible.
“Pastoralism” has been in place since Vatican II.
Does this Pope have any idea how much darkness he’s caused other Catholics to experience in their own faith on account of his bizarre actions?
