Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Book of Psalms

(Psalm 79)

Psalm 79

A psalm of Asaph.

1 O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;
    they have defiled your holy temple,
    they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
2 They have left the dead bodies of your servants
    as food for the birds of the sky,
    the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild.
3 They have poured out blood like water
    all around Jerusalem,
    and there is no one to bury the dead.
4 We are objects of contempt to our neighbors,
    of scorn and derision to those around us.

5 How long, Lord? Will you be angry forever?
    How long will your jealousy burn like fire?
6 Pour out your wrath on the nations
    that do not acknowledge you,
on the kingdoms
    that do not call on your name;
7 for they have devoured Jacob
    and devastated his homeland.

8 Do not hold against us the sins of past generations;
    may your mercy come quickly to meet us,
    for we are in desperate need.
9 Help us, God our Savior,
    for the glory of your name;
deliver us and forgive our sins
    for your name’s sake.
10 Why should the nations say,
    “Where is their God?”

Before our eyes, make known among the nations
    that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants.
11 May the groans of the prisoners come before you;
    with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die.
12 Pay back into the laps of our neighbors seven times
    the contempt they have hurled at you, Lord.
13 Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture,
    will praise you forever;
from generation to generation
    we will proclaim your praise.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

This Psalm is another "Lamentation" in Asaph's unique style. In today's world, we have nothing similar. The closest thing, perhaps, would be "Singing The Blues", or the infamous quote from "Conan The Barbarian" about seeing "your enemies driven before you, and hearing the lamentations of their women", but it is NOT the same. The Lamentations in the Bible do not contain despair, nor are they the whining complaints from someone who has lost their Faith. There is a reason that St. Thomas Aquinas included "Despair" (meaning the total loss of faith in God) in his list of the "Seven Deadly Sins".

Although some of Asaph's lamentations can get pretty dark (and those were dark days, believe me!), every one of them turns on a dime and expresses hope and Faith in the One True God for Salvation and Deliverance.

Even the Book of the Lamentations of Jeremiah has a verse right in the middle that has become the inspiration for two great modern hymns:

Lamentations 3:22-23English Standard Version (ESV)

22
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
23
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.

For Israel I pray,
O my God, I trust, lean on, rely on, and am confident in You. Let Israel not be put to shame or be disappointed; let not her enemies triumph over her. (Psalm 25:2 AMP)
For You will deliver her out of every trouble, and her eye shall look [in triumph] on her enemies. (Psalm 54:7 AMP)
My God in His mercy and steadfast love will meet her; God will let her look [triumphantly] on her enemies (those who lie in wait for her). (Psalm 59:10 AMP)
