Is Mary not a Virgin? The German Bishops’ New Bible Translation Leaves it... Unclear

GERMANY, September 21, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) — The German Bishops have presented a new “Unified Translation” of the Bible that follows a significant modernization of the language and will be binding for all German-speaking areas starting in 2017.

On Tuesday, the German Bishops Conference (DBK) presented in Fulda the fruit of many years of scientific work: a new edition of the so-called “Unified Translation" (Einheitsübersetzung) of the Bible into German. It’s called “unified” because, from the original published from 1962 onward, these editions are supposed to be used ecumenically, unifying Catholics and Protestants in Germany. The original aim, however, was thwarted in 2005 when Protestants reverted to the Luther translation.

The leader of the research project was the bishop (now emeritus) of Erfurt, Joachim Wanke, who explained that the new edition is a “moderate revision” of the older text. Wanke added that a translation is always also an interpretation. The new edition shows more “braveness” to present “biblical jargon,” he said, reported by kath.net.

According to Jewish tradition, the personal names of God cannot be pronounced, so “Yahweh” is substituted by “Lord” in the new edition. In fact, every paragraph has a change, explained Michael Theobald, president of the German Bible Association.

When the apostle Paul calls two new followers, they are not two men anymore, Andronicus and Junias; rather, a new discovery showed that apparently it was one man and one woman, hence Andronicus and Junia. This led to the discussion that the word “apostle” must be applied to women as well as men (Author’s note: In German, different genders of the word exist and usually gender-ideologists insist on using male and female forms).

Other changes are more ideological.

Most frightening is the change to the iconic Isaiah passage (7:14): “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son”.....

There is a old joke about a guy who was talking to his friend about a book..

“You have anything interesting?”
“Just some old Bible. It’s in German. Some guy named Guten tag, guten schlag. something like that.”
“Gutenberg?”
“Yeah, that’s the guy.”
“What did you do with it?”
“I threw it out.”
“YOU THREW OUT A GUTENBERG BIBLE?”
“Ah, you wouldn’t have wanted it anyway. Some guy named Martin luther scribbled all over it.”

In that case, Jesus’s siblings would hve been virgin births also.

Well, Claud, I have one explanation which I would bet you have never seen because it does not come out of the Protestant Reformation.

And just so you know, I am already born from above because God has so Promised to any who will faithe in The One He sent for their salvation. if you would read what Paul wrote in this regard, look at 1 Thess 1:10: in the DR Bible the translation is 'hath delivered us from the wrath to come'.

There is no thing more sure than a Promise from GOD. That is not presumption, it is standing on a Promise which cannot be broken, even by my foolishness since being born from above ... and at 71, after more than forty years, I can assure you I have done some foolish things. But giving up on God's Promise is not one of them.

They could be sons of Joseph from a previous marriage or they could be cousins (bnei dodim).

They are not cousins as there is a specific word for cousins in the Greek.

I can’t as I am reminded regularly on this forum.

However, as I have pointed out in the past, the need for *interpretation* only comes in when you don’t like what is being said and want it to say something else, something the plain, clear reading of the words doesn’t say.

As always, the problem here is with the model used to derive the conclusions. If the model is flawed, so too will be the conclusions.

True.

The problems with the model are obvious. Firstly, a half-baked Greek scholarship in contradiction to what the Greeks actually say (as pointed out by another poster). Wouldn't it be prudent to study the wrtings of the Greek Orthodox on Mary's perpetual virginity? They are Greek, after all.

NO. the opinion pieces of men do not hold up to the integrity of Scripture. It would be more prudent to read what the Holy spirit tells us in the word He inspired.

Secondly, a rejection of 2,000 years of Church tradition on this subject and the writings of numerous saints and doctors.

And rightly so when that *tradition* contradicts Scripture.

Thirdly, a prideful, personal analysis of Scripture, divorced from the Church which gave us Scripture.

Not an *analysis*. I simply posted the verses that refer to Jesus' siblings and showed that the Greek words for brother and sister mean brother and sister. Nor did the *church* give us Scripture. The HOLY SPIRIT gave us Scripture.

Put those three things together and it's a certainty that you'll end up in the swamp of heresy.

Not so because Scripture is the truth and you can't go wrong following that. You can go wrong following the opinion pieces of men. THAT'S where the heresy lies.

Many Greeks have already considered that argument. I find it amazing how many cousins the Apostle Paul had ...

By the 4th century, the doctrine of perpetual virginity had been well attested.[48] For example, references can be found in the 3rd century writings of Hippolytus of Rome, who called Mary "the tabernacle exempt from defilement and corruption," [49] and the 4th century works of Athanasius,[50] Epiphanius,[51] Hilary,[52] Didymus,[53] Ambrose,[54] Jerome,[55] and Siricius[56] continued the attestations to perpetual virginity – a trend that gathered pace in the next century.[6][7]

Which only reinforces that Catholicism thinks sex with her husband is dirty and wrong and sinful. Otherwise her body would not have been considered defiled and corrupted by having normal relations with her legitimate husband.

Also, no one is saying that marital sex is bad.

Oh really?

Then why do Catholics have such a cow over the thought of Mary having sex with her lawful husband?

But according to the passage posted a few posts back, it only defiles and corrupts her, right?

And if it defiles and corrupts, then it IS bad. If it wasn't bad, it didn't defile or corrupt.

So now St. Joseph, knowing this as a devout Jew, is told by an angel that God would now be dwelling *in his own house*. Those rooms, that whole dwelling was now more holy than the innermost sanctum of the Temple! And Joseph couldn’t just visit it once a year either. From the day Joseph took Our Lady in till the day he died, he was dwelling in the direct presence of God continually. Does it seem credible that the High Priest would know his wife carnally in the Holy of Holies?

What convoluted reasoning. A great example of how when the plain meaning of something isn't wanted, interpretation follows.

Was this the same Joseph who was told by the angel sent with a message from God to not fear to take Mary AS HIS WIFE?

So having sex in the presence of God is wrong and sinful? Do you realize that God sees married couples having sex, and *gasp* ENJOYING it, as HE intended? It was HIS idea, after all.

Do you realize that we all continually live in the direct presence of God? Or don't you believe that He is omnipresent?

Do you believe that Christ lives in the heart of the believer? What about all believers who have sex then? Are they not doing it in Jesus presence too?

Should all believers become celibate when they get saved?

Again, every argument used for the perpetual virginity of Mary goes back to the belief that sex between a husband and wife is bad or sinful.

Which Greek word did you mean ? What are all the occurrences of it in the New Testament ?

I just think it is dead wrong and ultimately fatal to the salvation you claim to already possess.

And just where does Scripture tell us that the perpetual virginity of Mary is crucial to our salvation?

Perhaps because they believe salvation flows through Mary in some non-biblical way?? The NT is clear it is only through Christ. No help from Mary or anyone else. What is so hard about that for Catholics?

NOT binding.

Toss it into the bin posthaste and replace with Douay-Rheims translation.
