Yes, Bergoglio said this to young people, many of whom are wrestling with all sorts of temptations right now.
For the record, saying God wants us to be morally weak is a vicious and damnable lie.
From Catholic News Agency: God prefers us weak, Pope Francis says off-the-cuff to youth Krakow, Poland, Jul 30, 2016 / 09:28 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The weaker we are, the more God's mercy can transform our lives. Pope Francis made these impromptu remarks on Saturday to crowds of young people gathered outside of Krakows St. John Paul II shrine. Today, the Lord wants us to feel ever more profoundly his great mercy, the Pope said in a short, impromptu speech, delivered right after his visit to the Polish citys Divine Mercy shrine. May we never turn away from Jesus! Pope Francis shared these thoughts to a group of young people who are in Poland for World Youth Day moments before entering the St. John Paul II shrine to pass through its Holy Door, hear confessions, and celebrate Mass for priests and religious men and women. We may think that we are the worst on account of our sins and weaknesses, the Pope told the youth. However, this is how God prefers us to be, in order that his mercy may spread. Let us take advantage of these days to receive all of the mercy of Jesus! Read the rest here:
Edit: Ilíon, in the comments below, reminds us of Romans 6, 1-2: What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
He makes Martie look like a good Catholic!
We are surely living in very evil times. I despair. At least I live in a country where I can buy a gun and lots of ammo.
We are sinful. However, I assume that God prefers for us to resist those temptations rather than celebrating sin, wallowing in it, and announcing our “Pride” in parades with banners flaunting our sins.
You have to do it, Miss M, if you haven't yet.
And we ought to try to get you west, as well, away from the urban plague.
You can go back and run for mayor after the war is won.
Don’t listen to anything this ‘actor’ is saying...stick to your beliefs like we were taught in Catholic School, don’t listen or pay attention to anything he says, he is the ‘false prophet’ and is evil!!!
I will dare say that he has more in common with Vickie Gene Robinson than Martin Luther. When is he going to fly the abomination Rainbow Flag at the Vatican.
This Southern Baptist misses Benedict XVI.
Hey Pope; Don’t quit your full time bouncer job.
This guy is just not right in the head.
Well then I’m set!!! :)
I am a Catholic and I’m getting fed up with this commie/Islamist loving Pope. He should go back to Argentina
For this mistake that is diametrically opposed to His word and other similar pronouncements and actions from this "Pope" Francis, I shake the dust off my feet at his door.

“God prefers us weak, Pope Francis says off-the-cuff to youth Krakow, Poland, Jul 30, 2016 / 09:28 am “
Stupidest remark by any pope, ever.
Just when you think he can’t be any worse....he is.
One can only wonder what this counterfeit does at night when the lights are down low.
Which, actually is the point. Not that you be weak, but that you be transformed. Sinful and weak is where you were before you were transformed. Transformed is the goal and purpose.
The Pope should read Romans again (if he ever has): “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, thay grace may abound? God forbid.” (Romans 6:1, 2)
It seems like the pope has never read Hebrews 5:12-13 and 10:26-27.
Galatians 1:8-9 comes to mind with this worldly pope.
The problem is the “off-the-cuff” nature of the remarks. Not well thought out, apparently.
If he had said something to the effect that God loves us when we are weak, and down and out, because He wants to pour out His mercy on us when we come to Him in our weakness and extreme need, well that’s okay. Of course, contrition and purpose of amendment need to be there to receive this Divine healing.
But to simply say God “prefers” us in our sins and weakness is at best very awkward, and at worst seems like heresy.

The Pope speaking off-the-cuff is only a problem if he really can’t remember what Catholic Doctrine is and has been for a long time.
